John Smith and a fencing crew noticed a glowing orb hanging motionless near New Castle, Colorado, for six hours. The crew first spotted the brilliant white object in the clear blue sky at approximately 11am, and it remained in the exact same position until they left around 4:30pm.
Smith captured images and footage of the luminous, almost perfectly circular object. He told the Daily Mail: "[It was] perfectly round and transparent through binoculars, almost like a ball of energy." He added that the object displayed no obvious movement despite being watched throughout the working day.
The crew claimed this was not their first encounter with the unexplained object. Smith said: "We saw the second orb a week later about 50 miles away on another jobsite, same exact situation. The orb stayed in place the entire day."
The photograph alone cannot establish the object's size, altitude, or distance from the camera, leaving open conventional explanations such as a balloon or an optical effect. However, its apparent ability to remain fixed for hours and its alleged appearance in two different places left witnesses searching for answers.
Weather balloon theories
Smith shared the footage and image in a Facebook group, where users offered numerous explanations for the mysterious sighting. One user commented: "I honestly think this is a daytime plasma orb, which doesn't happen often!"
Several other users argued that the object was nothing more than a weather balloon. Smith rejected that theory, saying: "It definitely wasn't a balloon… It was triple the height of a 747."
It remains unclear how Smith calculated the object's altitude, which cannot be established from the footage alone without reliable information about its size and distance from the camera. Some Boeing 747 models have a maximum operating altitude of 45,100 feet, meaning three times that height would be approximately 135,300 feet, or nearly 26 miles above Earth.
Weather balloons routinely climb above 100,000 feet before bursting and can appear almost stationary when viewed from a great distance. Smith said weather balloons are common around Aspen, but maintained that the object he and his colleagues witnessed was unlike any balloon they had previously seen.
