Film critic Sergey Sychev said Russian audience interest in police drama series jumped by 210 percent in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.
Speaking to Russian media outlet National News Service, known as NSN, Sychev explained that domestic streaming platforms are increasingly prioritizing crime series because production costs are lower while viewer engagement remains high.

Lower budgets drive focus on crime series
Sychev said online platforms are choosing a safe genre as overall production budgets across the television industry continue to decline. He noted that story lines are becoming more localized, helping crime-focused narratives secure a larger share of viewer attention.
According to Sychev, detective stories provide streaming services with a reliable investment because crime plots are guaranteed to hold audience interest without requiring extensive financial backing or complex visual effects.
Sychev is a prominent Russian cinema critic who regularly analyzes media industry trends and viewer demographics. Online video services in Russia have increasingly reshaped their catalog strategies in recent years, leaning heavily on original law enforcement procedurals and legal dramas to maintain subscriber numbers.
Security listings and television industry developments
The surge in viewership for police series comes alongside other recent developments involving domestic Russian television productions. Ukrainian authorities declared an actor from the popular Russian comedy series SashaTanya a threat to national security, according to earlier reports.
Cast members from the long-running show had previously been added to the database of Mirotvorets. The website, based in Ukraine, maintains a public index of individuals deemed by its creators to pose a risk to Ukrainian national security.
SashaTanya is a widely watched Russian sitcom that has aired for multiple seasons on the TNT network. Its performers are among several Russian cultural figures who have faced entry restrictions or administrative sanctions from Ukrainian law enforcement agencies in recent years.
