Extract from strawberry leaves can protect brain cells against damage characteristic of Parkinson's disease, according to a study by Japanese researchers published in Frontiers in Nutrition.

Laboratory experiments showed that compounds derived from the plant helped nerve cells survive toxic exposure and improved motor function in animal models of the condition.

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects the central nervous system, leading to movement difficulties, tremors, and muscle stiffness. The condition is primarily caused by the progressive death of dopaminergic neurons, specialized brain cells responsible for producing dopamine, a key neurotransmitter that regulates smooth motor control throughout the human body.

In the first phase of the study, the researchers tested the strawberry leaf extract on nerve cells that had been exposed to rotenone. Rotenone is a toxic chemical compound frequently used in laboratory research to trigger severe oxidative stress and disrupt the normal operation of cellular powerhouses known as mitochondria.

Mitochondria generate the essential chemical energy needed for living cells to survive and perform their functions. When exposed to rotenone without protection, cells suffer from a build-up of destructive molecules. The team found that applying the strawberry leaf extract helped the nerve cells survive, reduced the formation of harmful reactive oxygen species, and restored the normal energy-producing function of the mitochondria.

Testing on animal models

Following the cellular trials, the scientists evaluated the therapeutic effect of the extract on mice bred to exhibit a model of Parkinson's disease. Animals that received the strawberry leaf extract experienced a reduction in the loss of dopaminergic neurons compared to untreated subjects.

Along with preserving vital brain cells, the treatment led to measurable physical improvements in the laboratory mice. The researchers noted that movement impairments typical of the neurodegenerative condition became significantly less pronounced in the animals treated with the plant extract.

The research team attributed the protective properties of strawberry leaves to the polyphenols contained within the foliage. Polyphenols are naturally occurring plant compounds known for their strong antioxidant properties. According to the authors, these chemical compounds can activate the natural defense mechanisms of nerve cells, protecting them against oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage.

Future medical applications

The study authors suggested that compounds isolated from strawberry leaves could eventually form the foundation for new preventive or therapeutic treatments targeting neurodegenerative diseases. While whole plant extracts and herbal remedies have long featured in traditional medicine, isolating specific active compounds allows scientists to design targeted therapies for complex neurological conditions.

The investigation builds on broader scientific research into the health benefits of berry plant extracts. In a previous study cited by researchers, scientists discovered that cranberry extract could protect skin cells from changes caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
