Security personnel and military commanders across Russia are celebrating Russian Officers Day on August 21, an unofficial holiday honoring military and law enforcement services.
The date was established on the initiative of the Officers of Russia patriotic organization and intentionally timed to fall on the eve of the Day of the State Flag of the Russian Federation.
While the holiday initially focused on military officer corps spanning ranks from lieutenants to generals and marshals, it has expanded to include personnel from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Federal Security Service, investigative agencies, and other state bodies. On the same date, Russia also observes Stribog Day, a traditional holiday linked to ancient Slavic mythology.

International Day of Remembrance for Terrorism Victims
On the global stage, August 21 marks the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, an annual observance proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017 to demonstrate international solidarity with survivors and affected families.
According to the Global Terrorism Index, the countries most affected by terrorist violence in 2023 were Burkina Faso, Israel, Mali, Pakistan, and Syria. In Russia, the most recent major attack occurred in March 2024 at the Crocus City Hall venue near Moscow, where a mass shooting and fire killed more than 140 people and injured more than 550 others.

Around the world, August 21 is also recognized as Poet Day, Internet Self-Care Day, and Sweet Tea Day, while the Philippines observes Ninoy Aquino Day to honor the assassinated political figure.
Orthodox Observances and Folk Traditions
For Orthodox Christian believers, August 21 falls during the ongoing Dormition Fast and commemorates Saint Miron the Wonderworker, who served as Bishop of Crete at the turn of the fourth century.
According to church traditions, Miron began his life as a farmer who regularly assisted the poor. When he discovered thieves robbing his barn, he chose to help them carry out the heavy sacks of grain, an act that shamed the intruders into reforming their lives. The people of Crete later persuaded him to accept the episcopate, and legends record that he performed miracles such as stopping the Triton River during a flood to walk across its waters.

The Orthodox calendar on August 21 also marks the translation of the relics of Venerable Zosima and Savvatiy of Solovki, alongside commemorations for Confessor Emilian, Bishop of Cyzicus, Venerable Gregory the iconographer of the Caves, Venerable Gregory of Sinai, and the Tolga Icon of the Mother of God.
In Russian folk tradition, the date is known as Miron Vetrogon, or Miron the Wind-Bringer, with local weather conditions used to predict the coming seasons. A calm breeze portends a clear autumn, whereas strong winds signal stormy weather ahead. Folklore holds that an abundant berry harvest indicates a harsh winter, morning frost promises a bountiful crop for the following year, and still waters without ripples at noon predict a mild autumn and frost-free winter.

August 21 is also the birthday of several prominent global figures in technology, politics, sports, and entertainment, including Google co-founder Sergey Brin, who turns 53.
