Smartphones placed into long-term storage should have their batteries charged to approximately 50 percent before being powered down, according to recommendations published by technology news website BGR.
The publication warned that leaving a mobile handset turned off with a depleted battery can cause severe damage over time. It highlighted guidance from tech giant Apple, which states that storing a device with a fully discharged battery may render it incapable of holding a charge in the future.

In addition to battery management, experts advise storing smartphones in a cool, dry environment shielded from direct sunlight. Users who intend to keep a phone in storage for longer than six months should turn the device on once every half year to install necessary software updates.
Battery chemistry and self-discharge risks
The authors explained that self-discharge is an inherent characteristic of battery technology, caused by ongoing internal chemical reactions. This continuous internal activity leads to a loss of stored power equal to roughly a couple of percentage points every month.
Failing to prepare a handset before long-term storage can lead to total device failure. The authors noted that users who simply switch off a depleted phone and leave it inside a box risk finding that the device will not turn back on when needed.
Lithium-ion batteries, which power virtually all modern smartphones, suffer performance decay when subjected to deep discharge states or extreme environmental conditions. Digital publications such as BGR regularly test and publish maintenance procedures to assist consumers in preserving consumer electronics, while manufacturers like Apple publish official maintenance documentation to help users maximize device longevity.
New device setup and security
The recommendations follow previous consumer advice issued by technology website SlashGear regarding new smartphone setups. In a prior guide detailing the necessary actions to take after purchasing a new iPhone, SlashGear journalists recommended that buyers immediately enable stolen device protection features to secure their hardware.
