Apple iPhone 18 Pro to launch in September with 10 updates

Apple will announce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9 before sales begin later in the month, according to industry sources.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro to launch in September with 10 updates

Apple Inc. will unveil its next generation flagship smartphones, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, at a media event scheduled for September 9.

According to reports from Bloomberg, the presentation will take place on September 9, with retail sales set to begin during the second half of September 2026. While the upcoming Pro devices will maintain current display sizes of 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, industry insiders have detailed ten major hardware and design upgrades coming to the lineup.

Display design and LTPO+ screen technology

Rumors indicate Apple will shift the Face ID infrared illuminator beneath the display panel, reducing the Dynamic Island cutout area by approximately one third. The display bezels will reportedly remain identical to the previous generation, meaning design changes focus strictly on the front camera cutout rather than outer dimensions.

The 6.3 inch iPhone 18 Pro and 6.9 inch iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to adopt new LTPO+ display panels. The updated screen technology is designed to improve energy efficiency and extend battery endurance during daily operation.

Dynamic Island was introduced on Apple's premium iPhone devices as an interactive replacement for the traditional camera notch, merging hardware cutouts with live system notifications, software alerts, and background app controls.

Camera upgrades and variable aperture

The primary 48 megapixel Fusion camera across both Pro models will receive a variable aperture system for the first time. The mechanical aperture will allow users to control the volume of light reaching the image sensor and offer greater control over depth of field. However, analysts note that the practical effect on a compact smartphone sensor remains uncertain.

Record battery capacity and A20 Pro processor

Data from Chinese regulatory authorities indicates that Apple's top tier 2026 model will feature the largest battery capacity in the brand's history. The iPhone 18 Pro Max equipped with a physical SIM card slot will carry a 5,000 mAh battery, while the eSIM only variant will reach 5,200 mAh, marking a 10 percent increase compared to the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Both flagship models will be powered by Apple's new A20 Pro processor, manufactured using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's advanced two nanometer process node. The chipset utilizes a Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module (WMCM) RAM layout, delivering an expected 15 percent performance increase over the A19 Pro while reducing power consumption by 30 percent.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, known as TSMC, operates the world's largest semiconductor foundry and manufactures Apple's custom A-series processors in Taiwan.

Custom C2 modem and N2 wireless chip

Apple is reportedly preparing to launch its custom C2 modem in the iPhone 18 Pro line. The next generation modem is designed to deliver higher data speeds across 5G and LTE cellular networks while reducing overall power drain.

The iPhone 18 Pro will also upgrade to Apple's N2 wireless chip, replacing the N1 chip introduced in the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air for managing Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread protocol connections. The N2 chip is expected to enhance wireless speed and connection stability for features including AirDrop file transfers and personal hotspot sharing.

Apple is also simplifying the internal design of the physical Camera Control button. The capacitive touch layer and haptic feedback mechanism will be removed, leaving force sensing pressure recognition intact to streamline construction without altering primary camera functionality.

Single tone Ceramic Shield casing and Dark Cherry finish

The iPhone 18 Pro range may feature a seamless single tone Ceramic Shield rear casing. The change eliminates the two-tone visual appearance of the iPhone 17 Pro, where the back cover and glass insert had noticeable color differences.

Apple will introduce Dark Cherry as the flagship exclusive color for the 2026 Pro series, replacing the Cosmic Orange finish offered on the iPhone 17 Pro. Pure black and light blue color options, similar to the Sierra Blue introduced on the iPhone 13 Pro series, will also return.

Release schedule and future iPhone models

Chief Apple insider Mark Gurman confirmed that the standard baseline iPhone 18 will not launch this autumn. Apple's September event will focus on the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a new foldable smartphone called the iPhone Fold or Ultra.

The entry level iPhone 18 is expected to launch in spring 2027 alongside an updated iPhone 18e and the second generation iPhone Air 2. Separately, industry experts recently highlighted six used iPhone models recommended for purchase in 2026, listing the iPhone SE 3 with its A15 Bionic chip and iOS 27 support as the oldest recommended option.
