The defense attorney for musician César Sánchez Chavesta has spoken out against sexual harassment and improper touching allegations filed by singer Naldy Saldaña, calling the incident a mistake while confirming his client remains in Lima.
Speaking on the morning television program América Hoy on Wednesday, August 12, the lawyer urged the public not to rush to judgment against the former music director of the Peruvian cumbia group La Bella Luz before legal investigations conclude.
Saldaña, a former vocalist for the orchestra, filed formal complaints against Sánchez alleging harassment and unwanted physical contact. The case has drawn nationwide attention after video footage associated with the claims was broadcast on television.
During the broadcast, the attorney argued that commentators and members of the public were sentencing his client prematurely without waiting for the legal process to finish. He asserted that the case requires an evaluation of all available evidence rather than conclusions drawn from partial broadcast clips.
Addressing the video material linked to Saldaña's allegations, the defense lawyer insisted that authorities must review the full audiovisual recording to establish the complete context of what occurred.
Legal Defense and Evidence Demands
The legal representative also responded to additional statements from other former members of La Bella Luz who have publicly voiced allegations of harassment. He stated that anyone claiming to be a victim should report the matter to law enforcement and submit supporting evidence rather than joining public criticism.
Characterizing the accumulation of public allegations as an unfair crowd campaign, the lawyer said critics were seeking to demonize his client over an error. He added that no person is free from making mistakes and asked that Sánchez not be condemned before the judicial system reaches a verdict.
La Bella Luz is a prominent Peruvian cumbia musical group based in Lima, widely known for its touring ensemble of singers and performers. América Hoy is a popular morning television magazine show produced and broadcast across Peru by América Televisión.
Future Position with La Bella Luz
Looking to the resolution of the case, the defense attorney stated that if Sánchez is declared innocent, he should have the opportunity to regain his position as music director of La Bella Luz. He compared the legal process to a story that must reach a final outcome, expressing hope that his defendent would not be deprived of his freedom.
The attorney emphasized that Sánchez is a working professional who derives his income entirely from his musical activities and has a family to support. He noted that preserving his ability to work is essential for his household.
Referencing prior statements regarding the orchestra, the defense lawyer noted that Óscar Custodio had previously indicated Sánchez could return to La Bella Luz if the legal proceedings conclude in his favor.
