Spanish political party Vox will gain voters following recent immigration events in Ceuta, columnist Julián Cabrera wrote on August 6, 2026. Cabrera stated that candidates for Vox in upcoming elections will benefit from the government's handling of immigration, regardless of internal disputes, ideological issues, or management capacity within the party.
Cabrera described recent days in the autonomous city of Ceuta as a horror film, calling the events a tragic and shameful invasion of Spanish national territory and sovereignty. He attributed the situation to three main factors in a multi-sided play.
First, Cabrera cited a call effect caused by the mass regularisation of hundreds of thousands, and ultimately almost one million foreigners, carried out behind the backs of Congress and the European Union. Second, he pointed to a carrot and stick policy used by the Moroccan regime to test Spain and send messages.
Third, Cabrera highlighted a recurring obsession by the Alawite kingdom to annex Ceuta and Melilla. He stated that neither city was ever Moroccan and that no colonial dispute applies to them.
Moroccan Relations and Poll Gains
The columnist argued that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez showed weakness toward Morocco compared to previous table-banging leadership under Suárez, González, or Aznar. Cabrera predicted an imminent boost for Vox in polls regarding immigration, while constant Moroccan pressure continues against the two Spanish cities in North Africa.
The Alawite kingdom operates on a timeline different from Spanish politics, with no short or medium term urgency but a clear goal, according to Cabrera. He described the belief of the Sánchez administration that changing its stance on the Sahara would reduce Moroccan pressure on Ceuta and Melilla as naive.
Cabrera also criticized the Spanish Constitution for its lack of forcefulness in securing territorial integrity from Finisterre to Tarajal, despite guaranteeing other matters. He concluded that Vox will gather the walnuts, or benefits, of the crisis in Ceuta.
