Ukraine will pay one-time cash assistance of up to 3,100 hryvnias to several categories of citizens ahead of Independence Day on 24 August, the Pension Fund of Ukraine said.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence, a holiday the country is marking while continuing to defend its freedom. The state traditionally uses the day to honour not only the historical date but also those who paid the highest price for it.
The Pension Fund said the payments, which are made every year around the holiday, will reach recipients by 24 August 2026, with the amount depending on the recipient's category.
Who qualifies for the largest payments
The highest sum, 3,100 hryvnias, will go to citizens with special merits to the state, including Heroes of Ukraine.
People disabled as a result of the war, and former child prisoners of ghettos, concentration camps and other places of forced detention who have a disability, will also receive state assistance. The amount depends on the disability group: 3,100 hryvnias for Group I, 2,900 hryvnias for Group II and 2,700 hryvnias for Group III.
Payments for veterans and families of the fallen
A payment of 1,000 hryvnias is set for combat veterans, injured participants of the Euromaidan protests, former minor prisoners of ghettos, concentration camps and other places of forced detention, and people born in such places.
Relatives of fallen servicemen are also entitled to apply, with the payment for this category set at 650 hryvnias. A husband or wife of a fallen defender can receive the money provided they have not remarried.
The lowest payment, 450 hryvnias, is intended for former prisoners of ghettos, concentration camps and other places of forced detention who were taken for forced labour, as well as for children of partisans and other participants in the resistance against Nazism.
How to apply for the payment
The Pension Fund said part of the payments will be issued automatically. Pensioners entitled to the assistance will have it added to their August pension, while war veterans still serving in the military will have the money transferred to their unit's account.
Other eligible citizens must apply to the Pension Fund themselves, either in person, by post or online. The fund said the application deadline ends on 1 August but can be extended to 1 October for those unable to apply by then.
