Official figures published by the Bank of Spain on August 18 show national liabilities have expanded by €596.678 billion since June 2018, when Sánchez first arrived at the La Moncloa presidential palace.

The figures indicate that Spain's public administrations have borrowed an average of €198.89 million every day throughout Sánchez's 3,000 days leading the government. The borrowed funds are required to meet state expenditure across essential services, including public education, healthcare, and state pensions.

Rising borrowing costs and market risks

The Spanish government has highlighted that public debt has declined as a proportion of gross domestic product, the total measure of national economic output. However, official data shows the debt burden rose in comparison with May.

Investors have continued to buy Spanish sovereign bonds without major disruptions so far. However, financial markets are showing signs of mounting tension, led by increasing debt yields in the United States that make state borrowing more expensive globally.

Public spending and legislative budgets

Financial commentator Jesús Rivasés, writing in an opinion column published on August 20, argued that Spain failed to capitalize on recent years of macroeconomic growth to consolidate public accounts or curb borrowing. He noted that the government has engaged in extensive public spending without securing general state budgets across the legislative term.

Literary warning on national debt

Rivasés compared Spain's continuous accumulation of debt to a neverending story, drawing a parallel with German author Michael Ende. Ende, who lived from 1929 to 1995, wrote The Neverending Story as a philosophical novel and cited medieval Italian poet Dante Alighieri, who lived from 1265 to 1321, to argue that reaching reality requires passing through the fantastic.

Rivasés warned that el cobrador del frac, a traditional Spanish debt collection agency known for sending collectors in formal tailcoats to shame defaulting debtors, stands ready to intervene if financial markets develop any doubts about Spain's fiscal trajectory.
