Russian stage and screen actor Vasily Popov, who achieved recognition for his role in the 1986 feature film Attack, has died at the age of 78, representatives of the Novomoskovsk branch of the Gorky Tula Academic Drama Theatre told state news agency TASS.

Popov passed away on October 3, three days before what would have been his 79th birthday. Spokespersons for the theatre institution confirmed his passing, although representatives did not specify a cause of death.

Popov began his theatrical career as a resident actor at the Novomoskovsk Drama Theatre in the late 1970s. The venue operates as the eastern provincial branch of the Gorky Tula Academic Drama Theatre, a historic drama institution in Tula Oblast, south of Moscow, named in honor of Soviet author Maxim Gorky.

Career in Soviet cinema

Popov gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Captain Ordyntsev in the 1986 feature drama Attack, directed by Soviet filmmaker Igor Nikolayev. The military film depicts field tactical exercises, officer leadership dynamics, and daily life inside a Soviet army tank regiment.

Earlier in his screen career, Popov also played an episodic role in the 1980 drama Fox Hunting, directed by Vadim Abdrashitov. Abdrashitov was an acclaimed Soviet and Russian filmmaker recognized for social and psychological dramas, producing the feature film at the Mosfilm studios in Moscow alongside screenwriter Aleksandr Mindadze.

In 2016, Popov joined the performing ensemble at the Russian Theatre of Drama and Comedy of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic. Based in Cherkessk, the administrative capital of the North Caucasus republic in southern Russia, the troupe serves as the principal Russian-language drama company in the multiethnic region.

Recent losses in Russian drama

Popov is the second figure from Russian screen drama reported to have died in recent weeks. In September, news was announced of the death of actor Roman Veslaukh, who featured in the military drama film August. Veslaukh was 52 years old.
