Netflix has finished filming the third season of One Piece in Cape Town, South Africa, wrapping production on the live action series in summer 2026.
The third installment of the fantasy adventure show will adapt the Battle of Alabasta manga story arc, focusing on the Straw Hat Pirates as they clash with a powerful criminal organization.

The series is an adaptation of Eiichiro Oda's long running Japanese manga series of the same name. Official project details list the original title as One Piece: The Battle of Alabasta, produced across the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, and South Africa.

Season 3 release date and schedule
Producers announced in an April 2026 teaser video that the third season will premiere in 2027, although Netflix has not set an exact release date.
Netflix frequently targets summer windows for major franchise releases, including the third season of Squid Game and the second season of Wednesday. However, an official release during the summer months remains unconfirmed.
The streaming platform occasionally reschedules announced premiere dates to distribute major titles evenly throughout the year and prepare localized dubbing and subtitles across dozens of languages. Production on the third season also involves extensive visual effects and computer-generated imagery, which could extend post-production timelines.
An official full-length trailer has not been released yet. Netflix typically releases major trailers three to four months before a premiere, making an official trailer launch expected between late 2026 and early 2027. The 13-second teaser released in April contained no footage of the plot or characters.
Ratings and franchise background
The live action series launched on Netflix in 2023, with individual episodes running between 49 and 64 minutes. Viewership for the first season set internal platform records, outperforming major titles such as Wednesday and Stranger Things.
Critical and audience reviews remain high, holding an 8.0 rating on Kinopoisk and an 8.3 rating on IMDb. On review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, the show maintains a 93 percent critic rating and a 95 percent audience score on its popcornmeter indicator.
The source material created by Eiichiro Oda has been published continuously since 1997. With nearly 600 million copies sold worldwide, One Piece is the second best-selling comic series in history, behind only Superman. An anime series adaptation premiered in 1999 and aired its 22nd season in 2026.

Story arc from East Blue to Alabasta
Season 1 adapted the initial East Blue arc, introducing Captain Monkey D. Luffy, played by Iñaki Godoy, as he formed the core Straw Hat crew. In his childhood, Luffy accidentally ate the Rubber-Rubber Devil Fruit, granting his body the ability to stretch, compress, and reshape like plasticine.
Luffy set out to find the legendary One Piece treasure to become the Pirate King, gathering swordsman Roronoa Zoro, played by Mackenyu, navigator Nami, played by Emily Rudd, sniper Usopp, played by Jacob Gibson, and cook Sanji, played by Taz Skylar. After securing a map to the Grand Line ocean current, Luffy battled his grandfather, Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp, played by Vincent Regan, who eventually allowed his grandson to pursue piracy.
Season 2 released in 2026, covering the Loguetown, Reverse Mountain, Whisky Peak, and Little Garden story arcs. The crew added Tony Tony Chopper, encountered Marine officer Smoker, played by Callum Kerr, and met Princess Nefertari Vivi, played by Charithra Chandran. They uncovered the secret criminal syndicate Baroque Works, created to overthrow the desert kingdom of Alabasta. The crew agreed to escort Vivi home along the Grand Line while protecting her from assassins targeting her for knowing the secret identity of Baroque Works leader Mr. 0.
Season 3 centers entirely on the battle for the desert kingdom of Alabasta, a realm celebrated for its architecture and culture. Baroque Works incites a civil war that threatens to destroy the country. The Straw Hat Pirates and Princess Vivi attempt to stop the syndicate before the kingdom collapses. The Alabasta arc represents the first full-scale military conflict in the manga, featuring major battles and political maneuvering.

Production team and Oda supervision
Showrunners Matt Owens and Steven Maeda return to lead the third season. Owens previously wrote for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., while Maeda served on the writing teams for Lost and The X-Files. Eiichiro Oda is credited as a writer and executive producer.
Principal photography began in November 2025 and concluded on June 30, 2026, with main exterior filming taking place in Cape Town. Post-production tasks, including editing, dubbing, and visual effects rendering, typically take six to twelve months.
Oda strictly monitored production to ensure compliance with the original source material. He personally visited the Cape Town filming locations to evaluate scenes against the manga and required reshoots for any sequences that departed from canon.
