Nikos Dendias marks 114 years of Thessaloniki liberation

Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias marked the 114th anniversary of the liberation of Thessaloniki from Ottoman rule in a message on social media platform X.

Dendias highlighted that the date represents a double celebration for Thessaloniki, describing its liberation as one of the most significant milestones of modern Greek history. He noted that the occasion coincides with the feast of the city's patron saint and protector, Saint Demetrius, wishing Thessaloniki a happy anniversary alongside greetings to all Greeks named Dimitris and Dimitra celebrating their name day.

The minister also published an archival excerpt from the official report of the 1st Infantry Division recounting its entry into the northern Greek city, sourced from the Hellenic Army General Staff and its Army History Directorate.

According to the division report cited by Dendias, the realization of a great national dream and the manner in which it was accomplished etched that day into the heart of the nation as one of the most glorious and joyful days for the homeland.

Liberation of Thessaloniki from Ottoman rule

Greek forces entered Thessaloniki on October 26, 1912, during the First Balkan War, bringing an end to nearly five centuries of Ottoman control over the city. The Ottoman garrison surrendered to the advancing Greek army on the feast day of Saint Demetrius, permanently linking the military event with the religious observance in Greek civic life.

Saint Demetrius is recognized in the Christian tradition as the patron and protector of Thessaloniki, where he was martyred during the fourth century under the Roman Empire. The Orthodox feast day is widely observed throughout Greece, where name day festivities for those named Dimitra and Dimitris form a major part of the annual calendar.

Dendias has served as Minister of National Defence under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis since 2023, following four years as Minister of Foreign Affairs. The Hellenic Army General Staff, through its Army History Directorate, oversees the preservation and publication of primary historical documents detailing Greek military engagements.
