GoldCoast Finds Gold on Ghana Coast, Expands Offshore

Canadian exploration company GoldCoast Resource has discovered visible gold along the coast of Ghana and expanded its search into the Atlantic Ocean.

The company detected up to 13 gold grains in a single five-liter sand sample collected along the West African shoreline. The findings prompted GoldCoast Resource to push its prospecting operations off the coast into deep water, news outlet Liber Tatea reported.

Crews collected the sand samples between March and May 2026 as part of a coastal exploration program. The initiative covered approximately 75 kilometers of coastline between the settlements of Esiyama and Akwidaa in western Ghana, where visible gold appeared at several survey points scattered across a 50-kilometer stretch.

Ghana, located along the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa, has a rich history of onshore gold mining that earned the region its historical name, the Gold Coast. GoldCoast Resource is now testing whether that mineral wealth extends far beyond the modern shoreline onto the seabed.

Offshore Exploration and Airborne Surveys

GoldCoast Resource holds ten exploration licenses in the region, covering about 10,000 square kilometers of Ghana's continental shelf. The marine concession extends roughly 300 kilometers along the West African coast and reaches up to 33 kilometers out into the open sea.

Geologists are working to determine whether gold transported over centuries by Ghanaian rivers accumulated on the seabed. Researchers are focused on ancient submerged riverbeds, flooded beaches, and other underwater geological formations created before sea levels rose.

To identify priority targets across the vast ocean zone, an aircraft conducted low-altitude magnetic surveys. Flying at an altitude of approximately 50 meters, the aircraft gathered data over roughly 50,000 line kilometers across the continental shelf, according to Liber Tatea.

Initial survey data revealed several promising seabed targets. Exploration teams are currently conducting a detailed investigation of a 500-square-kilometer area located near the mouth of the Ankobra River, a major waterway in western Ghana.

Commercial Feasibility and Related Global Discoveries

Despite positive shoreline samples, there is currently no evidence of an economically viable gold deposit on the Atlantic seabed. The ongoing offshore survey aims to determine the total quantity of underwater gold and assess whether commercial extraction is financially feasible.

The marine survey in Ghana follows several other notable precious metal discoveries reported worldwide. In Aspendos, Turkey, archaeologists uncovered 2,400-year-old coins depicting classical era wrestlers, offering rare insight into ancient athletics during the classical period, news agency UNIAN reported.

Separately, home renovation workers in Belgium accidentally discovered gold bars and coins valued at 9 million euros. Belgian prosecutors opened a formal investigation to determine the origin of the hidden treasure and locate its rightful owner.
