Mysterious bright flashes of light were spotted near Edwards Air Force Base in California over the weekend, triggering widespread speculation over what caused the unexplained daylight bursts.

The bursts were captured in broad daylight by a public ALERTCalifornia wildlife camera, which forms part of the University of California San Diego monitoring network. Video of the event, published on X by The Informant, shows a series of intense bursts of light erupting across the Mojave Desert before expanding glows illuminate the surrounding landscape near the military base.

Edwards Air Force Base, situated about 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles, is known as a premier center for flight research and aircraft testing. No official explanation has been released for the phenomenon, and the Daily Mail has contacted the facility for comment.

Solar array reflection theories

While official sources have not commented on the cause, social media users have proposed competing theories. Several observers suggested that the flashes were caused by sunlight reflecting off a massive solar farm located in the area.

The military facility hosts the Edwards & Sanborn Solar and Energy Storage Project, a sprawling solar facility unveiled on the northwestern edge of the base in February 2023. Spanning 4,600 acres of private land and leased base property, the project was developed with Terra-Gen LLC and includes nearly two million solar panels, making it the largest solar array in U.S. Air Force history.

The facility can generate up to 1,300 megawatts of electricity for California's power grid, enough to supply more than 238,000 homes while preventing an estimated 320,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. Although solar panels are designed to absorb sunlight, their glass surfaces can produce intense momentary reflections known as glint when the sun and an observer align at certain angles.

Speculation over secret weapon tests

Despite the solar panel explanation, many social media users remain unconvinced and have speculated that the lights stem from secret military operations. "This is a test," one user wrote, while another commented, "It looks like a phenomenon coming from underground military authorities. Must investigate ASAP."

Other users suggested the lights were connected to covert aircraft activity. "Probably moving a secret aircraft and they're using floodlights to screen it from observers," one commenter posted on the video. Another added, "All the people saying solar panels are bots you can easily tell. This is most likely some weapons test, or us getting got by a foreign state."

Air Force test center role

Described as an "irreplaceable national asset," Edwards Air Force Base remains at the center of a significant portion of the U.S. Air Force's aircraft testing and development efforts. All Air Force aircraft are tested at the facility, along with some Navy and Army aircraft, according to the base.

Base officials state that, "Arguably, more major milestones in flight have occurred at this base than anywhere else in the world." The facility is operated by the 412th Test Wing, which conducts developmental testing of Air Force weapons systems, software and components before purchase by the service as well as throughout their life span.
