The Consulate General of the Dominican Republic in New Orleans presented the major achievements of Consul General Rosa Yanina Torres Tamares during her tenure from 2024 to 2026.
The ceremony brought together Dominican community members, local authorities, business leaders, and institutional partners to review consular programs, expanded assistance, and cultural initiatives developed over nearly two years in office.
Consulates serve as official diplomatic offices that assist citizens living abroad, issue legal documentation, and foster economic and cultural connections between nations.
Key highlights of the administration included the signing of a Sister Cities Agreement between Puerto Plata and New Orleans to promote cultural, tourist, economic, and institutional cooperation.
Cultural and Business Initiatives
As part of the bilateral agreement, the consulate established a cultural exchange mission with the New Orleans Jazz Museum.

During the ceremony, Torres Tamares presented the museum with a Taimascaro, a traditional character from the Puerto Plata carnival, to serve as a permanent symbol of the cultural alliance between both cities.
The consulate also hosted the Dominican Night of Rum and Tobacco, an initiative designed to showcase representative national industries, foster business networking, and position the Dominican Republic as a destination for trade, investment, and tourism.
To strengthen commercial ties across the region, the diplomatic post created the Dominican Business Directory, a tool designed to identify, highlight, and connect merchants, professionals, and entrepreneurs within the consular jurisdiction.
The administration also launched Tu Consulado te Visita, a mobile outreach program that brought consular services and guidance directly to various localities and states, with a primary focus on Georgia.
The mobile initiative assisted Dominican residents who faced challenges visiting the central office in Louisiana due to travel distance, work obligations, or mobility limitations.

Community Recognitions and New Appointment
The ceremony included awards for men, women, community organizations, businesses, and institutions that supported the consular mission's projects.
Special recognition was awarded to the children's folklore group Dominican NOLA Dancers for its work in preserving and sharing Dominican cultural traditions with younger generations.
Consular staff presented a special honor to Torres Tamares for her leadership and dedication. During the program, Luz Estrella delivered a biographical profile highlighting her career as an educator, her vocation for service, her integrity, her faith, and her ongoing closeness to local communities.
In her farewell address, Torres Tamares expressed gratitude to President Luis Abinader for placing trust in her leadership. She also thanked the Dominican community, New Orleans and Louisiana authorities, the consular corps, social, cultural, and religious organizations, business leaders, and her consular team.
Following her tenure in New Orleans, Torres Tamares will assume a new position as Consul General of the Dominican Republic in Atlanta, Georgia, following her appointment by President Luis Abinader.
She will serve as the first head of the newly approved diplomatic mission in Atlanta, which was authorized by the United States Department of State, where she will oversee its setup and opening.
