Dmitry Oganian found dead near St Petersburg sea port

Russian musician Dmitry Oganian, a former bass guitarist for the rock band Kukryniksy, has been found dead in the water near the sea port on Vasilievsky Island in St Petersburg.

The 45-year-old bassist, who was known by the nickname Vagon, was wearing only a T-shirt and underwear when his body was discovered on Thursday, August 20, 2026. Police officers attending the scene located his severed left hand, an axe, and his footwear lying on the shore near the water.

Investigators in St Petersburg are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the death. Preliminary findings indicate no signs of a criminal act committed against the musician, with law enforcement currently treating the incident as non-criminal in nature.

According to the Telegram news channel Shot, the body had been in the water for some time prior to its discovery. The channel reported that preliminary inquiries suggest Oganian walked to the port area alone while carrying an axe, severed his left hand on a stone near a pond, removed his shoes, and entered the water. News outlet Baza added that investigators found no initial evidence that any third party was involved in his death.

Preliminary reports indicate that Oganian had been experiencing mental health issues prior to the incident.

Investigation and medical history

Investigators are examining whether chronic medical problems with Oganian's hands contributed to his state of mind before his death. According to Baza, the bassist had suffered from a severe skin condition on his hands for approximately three years, which severely hindered his ability to perform.

Deep cracks on his finger pads made pressing down strings on the fretboard painful and difficult, forcing him to use protective attachments on his fingers during performances. The left hand, which was found severed at the shore, was the hand Oganian used to press strings against the bass guitar fretboard.

Anatoly Sklyarenko, the vocalist and guitarist for the St Petersburg rock group Brigadny Podryad, told the news outlet Mash that he had spoken with Oganian several months ago. Sklyarenko said Oganian appeared in good spirits and seemed normal at the time, though he complained about the deteriorating condition of his fingers. Speaking to REN TV, Sklyarenko added that medical treatment had failed to relieve the condition, forcing Oganian to take a temporary break from live performances because of his cracking skin.

Sklyarenko said Oganian constantly applied creams to his hands and suffered greatly from the persistent ailment, having sought medical care without success. Bass guitarists press heavy metal strings against hard wood fretboards to produce notes, making skin conditions on the fingers particularly debilitating for professional players.

Although Oganian managed to bring his finger eczema under control in June, the skin on his left fingers began cracking again recently. In August, Oganian had resumed active rehearsals with the band XseLen as he prepared to return to the stage.

Family reactions and personal background

Oganian's relatives have rejected suggestions that he intended to take his own life. His brother, Tigran Oganian, told the news channel 112 that Dmitry had never expressed suicidal thoughts or complained of overwhelming personal troubles. Tigran said that everything was normal with his brother, adding that he was traveling from Vologda to St Petersburg following the news.

Tigran Oganian said his brother leaves behind three children, including two young children aged three and five, as well as a child from a previous marriage.

The death comes after a series of personal tragedies for Oganian's wife, Anna Oganian. According to Baza, Anna suffered the loss of her brother in June and a close friend in July, prior to her husband's death in August.

Musical career and tributes

Dmitry Oganian was a prominent figure in the Russian rock scene for more than two decades. He joined the St Petersburg rock group Kukryniksy in 2000 as its bass guitarist and backing vocalist, remaining with the band until 2018. Kukryniksy was founded in 1997 by Alexey Gorshenev, the younger brother of Mikhail Gorshenev, the late leader of the influential Russian punk group Korol i Shut.

Following his departure from Kukryniksy, Oganian continued performing as a bassist with Brigadny Podryad until around 2023. One of his final public performances took place on February 22, 2026, at the Lastochka club in St Petersburg, where colleagues noted that he was still complaining about the painful condition of his left finger pads. He had recently been rehearsing and performing with the group XSELEN.

Alexey Gorshenev confirmed Oganian's death on social media, describing his former bandmate as a cheerful and positive person, a talented musician, and a devoted father to his three children who had walked a long creative path alongside the band.
