The Greek opposition party PASOK has strongly criticized Justice Minister George Floridis after he warned on public television that failure by the ruling party to win a single-party majority in upcoming elections could risk a military confrontation with Turkey.
PASOK press spokesperson Costas Tsoukalas responded to the statements by accusing the government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of sliding into dangerous paths and threatening Greek voters with foreign security fears to retain political power.
During a broadcast on public television, Floridis stated that Greece faced a national risk in the upcoming election. He claimed that if the ruling New Democracy party failed to secure a self-reliant parliamentary majority on election night, forces from across the border would launch a raid, directly referencing the potential for a hot incident with neighboring Turkey.
New Democracy is Greece's governing center-right party, led by Prime Minister Mitsotakis, while PASOK, officially known as the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, serves as a primary center-left opposition party in the Hellenic Parliament in Athens. In Greek electoral politics, a self-reliant majority refers to winning at least 151 seats in the 300-seat legislature, allowing a single party to form a government without relying on coalition partners.
Opposition Accuses Government of Arrogance
In a formal statement addressing the minister's television comments, Tsoukalas said that the administration was threatening the Greek public as they prepare to exercise their vote. He emphasized that by implying election results could open the path to Turkish hostility, the government's downward slide appeared to have no end.
Tsoukalas further argued that the government led by Mitsotakis was not synonymous with stability as it claimed, describing the ruling administration as deeply dangerous, authoritarian, and arrogant.
Relations between Greece and Turkey, both member nations of NATO, have long been shaped by diplomatic disputes over maritime boundaries, seabed energy exploration, and airspace rights across the Aegean Sea. In Greek defense and political terminology, a hot incident refers to an escalated armed confrontation or military clash between the armed forces of the two neighboring countries.
Spokesperson Appeals Directly to Prime Minister
Addressing Prime Minister Mitsotakis directly, the PASOK spokesperson stated that cabinet ministers must not be permitted to play games with sensitive national issues. Tsoukalas asserted that the homeland must always be placed above petty party interests and remains more important than all political considerations.
The sharp exchange comes amid heightened political debate in Athens over national defense strategies, electoral readiness, and foreign relations with Ankara. Neither Prime Minister Mitsotakis nor the Ministry of Justice issued an immediate official response following the publication of the PASOK statement.
