Greek musician Aris Mougkopetros has returned to performing at live venues after losing two fingers in an Easter firecracker accident in 2025.
Mougkopetros described the public response to his comeback as a popular pilgrimage during an appearance on the television programme Koinonia Ora Mega on Monday 17 August 2026.
The clarinet virtuoso was injured during an Easter celebration in 2025 when a firecracker exploded, resulting in the amputation of two of his five fingers. Despite the severity of his injuries, he resumed playing his instrument after an absence of nearly eighteen months.
Speaking on television, Mougkopetros said he felt much better and stronger than ever, expressing happiness at being able to return to his work. He explained that he could not have imagined in his wildest dreams that every performance would draw such overwhelming crowds.
He added that the affection shown by the public provided him with immense strength. He noted that members of the audience, including children and people who do not normally attend traditional festivals, frequently approach him to share their own difficulties and say they draw inspiration from his recovery.
Mougkopetros described the experience of performing before crowds of four thousand to five thousand people as deeply moving, saying that receiving such abundant energy left him speechless.
Faith and Recovery
The musician credited his religious faith as the key source of his strength throughout his recovery. He stated that God helped him through the ordeal, adding that his prayers were answered and allowed him to relive experiences he feared he had lost.
Mougkopetros said he never doubted that he would play music again, though he was unprepared for the scale of public affection. He recalled that during his first performance in Athens following his return, it took him an hour and a half to reach the stage because he stopped to greet audience members.
Mougkopetros is a master of the Greek clarinet, a woodwind instrument central to folk music in Greece. The instrument requires precise fingerwork across multiple tone holes and keys, making a return to professional performance following finger amputations a remarkable technical achievement.
His performances take place at traditional summer festivals known across Greece as panigyria. These community celebrations feature live folk music, traditional dancing, and regional food, serving as vital cultural gatherings in towns and villages throughout the country during the summer months.
Return to the Stage
Mougkopetros made his formal return to live music in July 2026, marking his first public performance nearly fourteen months after the accident.
Following that initial comeback performance on 11 July 2026, Mougkopetros remarked that returning to the stage was a milestone moment that would remain with him for the rest of his life.
