Greece's New Democracy party has paid tribute to former minister Stefanos Manos following his death, describing him as a distinctive and uncompromising figure who left a lasting mark on the country's public life.
In an official statement released by its press office, the party reflected on Manos's extended political career, noting the key cabinet posts he held and the major reforms he introduced across the economy, infrastructure, the environment, and spatial planning.
New Democracy, a centre-right party in Greece, highlighted his direct speech and steady commitment to his principles, even when his positions were not popular.
Early life and education
Born in Athens in 1939, Manos studied mechanical engineering at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, before earning a degree in business administration from Harvard University in the United States. He worked in business for eleven years before deciding to enter active political life.
Government posts and political career
Manos was first elected as a Member of Parliament for New Democracy in 1977. He served the party over many years and took on major ministerial duties in the governments of former Greek Prime Ministers Konstantinos Karamanlis, Georgios Rallis, and Konstantinos Mitsotakis.
During his time in office, he served as Deputy Minister of Public Works, Minister of Spatial Planning, Housing and Environment, Minister of Industry and Energy, Minister of Environment, Spatial Planning and Public Works, Minister of National Economy, and Minister of Finance.
Reforms and later contributions
The party noted that across his ministerial posts, Manos was tied to major reforms and interventions that shaped Greece's economy, infrastructure, environment, spatial planning, and the daily lives of citizens.
After finishing his trajectory with New Democracy, he remained an active participant in public life, consistently advocating his principles and maintaining a prominent presence in political debate. New Democracy stated that he was above all an uncompromising politician who did not hesitate to defend his beliefs when unpopular or fight for what he viewed as necessary for the nation, adding that his reformist vision helped modernize Greece.
