Anton Kovalskyi denies talks on top Ukraine prosecutor role

Acting Prosecutor General Anton Kovalskyi has stated that no discussions have taken place regarding his permanent appointment as Ukraine's top prosecutor. Speaking to journalists, he confirmed that he retains his post as head of the Khmelnytskyi Regional Prosecutor's Office and continues to draw his salary there.

Kovalskyi also said that the official office of former Ukrainian Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko currently sits unused. He explained that nobody is occupying the former chief's workplace, adding that he has set up his working quarters in a different room.

When asked whether he would agree to lead the Prosecutor General's Office on a permanent basis, Kovalskyi said he would resolve the matter if he received an offer. He stressed that nobody had discussed any appointment to the post with him, adding that no such talks had occurred or were currently taking place.

Leadership changes under martial law

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree dismissing Kravchenko from the post of prosecutor general on September 15, news agency UNIAN reported. Kovalskyi has served as acting prosecutor general since September 17.

President Zelenskyy made the appointment under the legal regime of martial law, which governs public authority during wartime. The Prosecutor General's Office oversees criminal prosecutions and supervises law enforcement bodies across Ukraine.

Career in the prosecution service

Kovalskyi graduated with a law degree from the National Academy of Public Prosecution of Ukraine in 2011, joining the service that same year. He rose through roles in Vinnytsia, working as a senior investigator and as a senior prosecutor in the city prosecutor's office.

He later worked as a senior prosecutor in the Vinnytsia Regional Prosecutor's Office and headed its division supervising fiscal compliance in criminal proceedings. He subsequently directed the regional criminal supervision department before becoming deputy prosecutor of Vinnytsia Oblast.

Between September 2020 and October 2021, Kovalskyi served as deputy head of the Vinnytsia Regional Prosecutor's Office. He was appointed head of the Chernivtsi Regional Prosecutor's Office in November 2021.
