Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova told TASS that the fate of 302 residents of border districts in the Kursk region has been unknown since the Ukrainian army invaded two years ago.
Lantratova noted that searching for local residents became one of the most difficult issues from the first days of the invasion by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as communication with them was lost. She emphasized that the fate of those 302 people remains unknown.
Liberation and prisoner returns
The Ukrainian army launched a massive attack on the Kursk region on August 6, 2024. In late April 2025, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov reported to President Vladimir Putin that the Russian military had completely liberated the Kursk region from the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Lantratova previously stated that recent attacks on civilians in Russian regions demonstrated an absence of moral principles in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, noting that all of Kyiv's crimes are monstrous. In June, Lantratova stated that 1,711 Russians had been found in captivity in Ukraine, with 1,025 returning home, including seven civilians from the Kursk region.
