Xiaomi has officially introduced HyperOS 4, the next generation of its operating system.
The update brings a visual overhaul alongside new artificial intelligence features, improved privacy and better cross-device continuity. A beta version will roll out in late August, starting with the Xiaomi 17 series and REDMI K90 smartphones.
The company said HyperOS 4 promises a faster and more intuitive experience. It includes a redesigned application runtime environment intended to make system apps run more efficiently and use less memory.
The software update introduces several new features across the platform:
- More customization options for the lock screen
- Smart grouping for notifications
- Drag-and-drop folder sizing on the home screen
- An improved Fusion Device Center
- Background performance boosts and enhanced security
Performance and memory upgrades
Xiaomi reported that tests showed a 17.5 percent drop in the time needed to open 30 consecutive applications. The company also noted a 28.9 percent reduction in frame drops during long sessions.
The operating system uses artificial intelligence to predict which resources an application will need and preloads them into the device memory. Xiaomi said app loading speeds are about 18 percent faster than HyperOS 3 after nine hours of phone use.
Camera performance is also updated, with HDR image processing times reduced from 310 milliseconds to 240 milliseconds. The camera app opens about 200 milliseconds faster, and video playback is optimized to cut down on dropped frames.
Other system improvements lower command loads by 14.4 percent and leave 27.2 percent more free memory after eight hours of use. Battery life is extended by 0.26 hours, and browsing through photo galleries of more than 10,000 images is now up to 90 percent faster.
Translucent interface design
The visual changes center on a new design language called Soft Light Glass. Xiaomi said the look draws inspiration from Apple's Liquid Glass, adding translucent elements and lighting effects throughout the interface.
The changes appear in menus, widgets, folders and the Quick Settings panel. Xiaomi is working on realistic refraction effects to make the interface feel more dynamic.
Users can customize their lock screens by resizing and moving the clock. The update groups notifications together and adds options for resizing folders and grouping widgets. Applications transition more smoothly between portrait and landscape modes, including those in floating windows.
Artificial intelligence tools
HyperOS 4 includes Super AI Assistant 2.0 in an Expert Mode, powered by Xiaomi's MiMo large language model. The assistant handles voice transcription, note editing, photo searches, travel planning and smart home controls.
A new interactive feature called the Inspiration Ball acts as a contextual pointer. Users can drag it over an address to get directions or select a product image to search the internet. Real-time interactive elements also include a Status Island and a Scan or QR Island. A tool called Xiaomi Super Island displays when a complex command is received and processed before showing the result.
Artificial intelligence upgrades extend to the company's native applications. The Recorder app can generate outlines and summaries, highlight important information and automatically skip silent sections.
The Super XiaoAI Input Method features real-time voice translation and structured audio transcriptions. The AI Voice Notes app can pull information from images and turn it into actionable task lists.
