The United States Secret Service is investigating an Iranian state television broadcast that outlined a potential assassination plot against US President Donald Trump's youngest son, Barron Trump.
Agency spokesman Nate Herring confirmed in an email that protective officials are aware of the footage and investigate anything that could be interpreted as a threat against individuals under their security detail.
Herring added that for operational security reasons, the Secret Service does not publicly discuss protective intelligence matters or specific security measures.
The video, which ran for approximately three minutes on Iran's state network, claimed that 20-year-old Barron Trump is currently under surveillance. According to the claims made in the broadcast, a reward of 10 million dollars has been offered for his murder.
The Secret Service is the federal law enforcement agency tasked with safeguarding top American leaders, presidential candidates, and their immediate families. Barron Trump is the youngest child of President Donald Trump.
Escalating conflict between Washington and Tehran
The development comes during a period of severe diplomatic and military hostility between Washington and Tehran. The two nations have been locked in ongoing conflict following the outbreak of a war launched in February by the United States and Israel.
Israel had previously scaled back its direct participation in hostilities following a ceasefire agreement reached in April. However, that truce has since collapsed, leading to renewed military activity and hostile rhetoric across the region.
Prior warnings regarding Donald Trump
Security concerns regarding Iranian actions against the presidential family follow earlier disclosures about threats directed at Donald Trump himself. Global news agency Reuters reported earlier this month, citing officials, that Israel had issued repeated warnings to the US over the past year concerning alleged Iranian intentions to assassinate the American president.
Those intelligence warnings included a specific alert delivered prior to a secret security maneuver involving the presidential aircraft, Air Force One, in Turkey.
Trump has previously spoken about the security risks surrounding his administration, stating publicly that he considers himself to be the primary target on Iran's hit list.
