Ukrainian Hryvnia Strengthens Against US Dollar and Euro

The Ukrainian hryvnia strengthened against the US dollar and euro in commercial banks and currency exchange kiosks across Ukraine on Thursday, August 27.

The National Bank of Ukraine, the nation's central financial institution, established the official dollar rate at 44.57 hryvnias for Thursday. The figure represents a 10-kopeck increase in the value of the domestic currency compared to the previous official benchmark.

Ukraine's central bank also set the official exchange rate for the euro at 52.01 hryvnias per euro, marking an 8-kopeck gain for the hryvnia.

In commercial banks, the average exchange rate for the US dollar decreased by 4 kopecks to 44.88 hryvnias per dollar on Thursday. Members of the public selling US dollars at commercial banks received an average rate of 44.42 hryvnias per dollar.

Commercial bank exchange rates for the euro also moved downward, with the average rate falling by 6 kopecks to 52.33 hryvnias per euro. The average rate for customers selling euros at banks stood at 51.70 hryvnias.

Exchange booth rates

At independent currency exchange points across Ukraine, the average purchasing cost for a US dollar fell to 44.77 hryvnias on Thursday morning. Customers selling dollars at exchange booths received a rate of 44.67 hryvnias per dollar.

Cash euro exchange rates at currency kiosks reached an average buying price of 52.15 hryvnias per euro, while the average selling rate for customers was set at 51.95 hryvnias per euro. In Ukraine, official currency values are calculated in hryvnias, with 100 kopecks making up one hryvnia.

Global cryptocurrency market

The softening of the dollar coincided with significant movement in global cryptocurrency markets, where Bitcoin rose above $80,000 for the first time since mid-May before climbing past $81,000.

The surge in the world's leading cryptocurrency occurred amid broader weakness in the US dollar and regulatory intervention by the US Department of the Treasury to stabilize the long-term bond market.
