Ukrainian currency exchanges saw buying and selling rates for the US dollar and euro fluctuate on Sunday, August 30, amid heightened financial market risks.
Analyst Oleksiy Kozyrev noted that dollar exchange rates on Sunday at most exchange kiosks and open bank branches would range between 44.30 and 44.60 hryvnias for buying, and 44.70 to 45.05 hryvnias for selling. Euro rates were set to hover between 51.50 and 51.90 hryvnias for buying, and 52.10 to 52.50 hryvnias for selling.
Kozyrev said increased currency risks made a wide dispersion of price quotes the primary feature of the market. Most exchange offices operated with dollar spreads between 15 and 25 kopiykas and euro spreads between 20 and 70 kopiykas, while the greediest networks stretched weekend spreads up to 1 hryvnia for both currencies.
Official exchange rates for Monday
The National Bank of Ukraine set the official exchange rate for Monday, August 31, at 44.55 hryvnias per US dollar. The central bank also established the official euro exchange rate at 51.88 hryvnias for the same date.
On the interbank currency market, hryvnia quotations against the US dollar settled at 44.51 to 44.56 hryvnias. Interbank quotations for the euro stood between 51.90 and 51.92 hryvnias.
The hryvnia is the national currency of Ukraine, with one hryvnia divided into 100 kopiykas. The National Bank of Ukraine serves as the country's central bank, regulating monetary policy and setting official daily exchange benchmark rates that guide commercial banking transactions.
Global currency market pressure
The end of August brought heightened volatility across both global and Ukrainian foreign exchange markets. International investors paused ahead of key monetary policy decisions from the US Federal Reserve System against the backdrop of record United States national debt.
The Federal Reserve operates as the central bank of the United States, where interest rate decisions significantly impact global investor sentiment and international exchange rates. Despite global uncertainties, Ukraine's domestic market attempted to maintain financial stability through the close of the month.
