Seven people were killed, including two children, when a minibus carrying a family to an engagement party overturned in Lice, a district of Diyarbakır province in southeastern Turkey, on Saturday morning, the governor's office said.
The toll rose from an earlier provisional count of five dead and eleven injured, according to the governor's office.
"Two of our fellow citizens lost their lives at the scene of the accident and another five died in the hospitals where they were transferred," the governor's office said, according to the source's translated statement.
Nine people remained under medical care in hospitals across Diyarbakır province, one of them in serious condition, the governor's office said.
How the Crash Happened
The minibus was carrying family members to Muş, also in southeastern Turkey, where an engagement party was due to be held, when one of its tyres burst, the private Turkish broadcaster NTV reported.
The driver lost control of the vehicle and the minibus overturned, according to the NTV report.
The two children who died were aged four and ten.
Conflicting Accounts of the Crash
Turkish state broadcaster TRT Haber reported similar figures, saying seven people had died and nine were injured, one of them seriously, after the minibus overturned in Lice.
A separate report from broadcaster 24 TV described the crash as a collision between the minibus and a bus on the Diyarbakır-Lice road, also putting the death toll at seven. That account differs from the tyre-burst explanation given by NTV, and the governor's office did not specify a cause.
Where the Crash Took Place
Diyarbakır is the largest city in southeastern Turkey and the administrative centre of the province of the same name. Lice, where the crash happened, is one of its rural districts, connected by highway to neighbouring Muş province, where the family had been travelling for the engagement celebration.
