President Donald Trump said Monday that talks with Iran are continuing and warned Tehran it will not get another chance to sign a good agreement.
Speaking from the Oval Office, where he signed a presidential decree and took questions from reporters on a range of current events, Trump said the talks "are happening now and the Iranians don't deny it." He added that for some reason, when Iranian officials talk, they don't like to say that they are talking.
Trump said the United States is taking part in the talks at Iran's request, with the support of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and other countries.
He then delivered a direct warning to Tehran. "This is their last chance to sign a good document," Trump said, according to a post by Clash Report on social media that captured his remarks.
Trump said the talks would end quickly, one way or another, and added that they were not very complicated.
Strait of Hormuz
Trump said negotiators are discussing fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He said that once that is settled, attention would turn to Iran's nuclear capability.
On the question of tolls for passage through the strait, Trump again rejected the idea that Iran would be the one to impose them. "If anybody is gonna charge, we'll charge. We have total control," he said, according to a post by journalist Aaron Rupar that captured the remarks on video. The comment contradicted what Trump had said only moments earlier in the same appearance.
