Theo James Rules Himself Out of Playing the Next James Bond

Actor Theo James has ruled himself out of playing James Bond, stating that he is now too old to take over the role of 007. The 41-year-old star of the Netflix series The Gentlemen had been consistently named among potential candidates to succeed Daniel Craig, but confirmed he will not be stepping into the iconic spy franchise.

Speaking about the ongoing casting rumors, James, who is of Greek heritage, explained that despite Craig playing Bond until the age of 51, he considers himself far too old to begin playing the character. His decision follows an announcement from Amazon MGM Studios in May that formal auditions for the next 007 film had officially begun.

Age was not the only factor behind his decision to step aside. In an interview with GQ magazine, James explained that taking on the role of James Bond represents a major career shift and a situation from which an actor can never return.

Jack Lowden emerges as candidate

With James removing himself from the race, Scottish actor Jack Lowden has emerged as a top candidate for the role of Bond. Producers associated with the 007 franchise are reportedly examining the star of the Apple TV thriller series Slow Horses very seriously.

Television presenter and author Richard Osman highlighted Lowden as a leading contender during an episode of the podcast The Rest Is Entertainment. Osman stated that an industry contact recently informed him with certainty that Lowden was being considered for the iconic part.

Osman clarified that the role has not been officially finalized or awarded to Lowden. However, he emphasized that executives are giving the actor serious consideration and expressed confidence that Lowden would be an amazing choice for 007.

Public reaction and producer choices

Osman also addressed ongoing fan speculation, noting that public opinion is rarely a reliable guide when selecting a new James Bond. Reflecting on past casting announcements across the history of the franchise, he observed that almost no actor chosen for the role was the public favorite prior to being selected.

According to Osman, Pierce Brosnan was perhaps the sole exception when he was cast as Bond, playing the agent between 1995 and 2002. By contrast, Osman pointed out that fans were furious when Daniel Craig was originally announced for the role before he went on to complete his final film as 007 at age 51.

Osman emphasized that audiences must trust franchise producers to select performers who can redefine the character. He explained that producers often identify actors whom the public does not yet realize it wants to see in the lead role.

Methodical search for Daniel Craig successor

Bond producer Amy Pascal provided an update on the audition process earlier this month, confirming that studio executives are proceeding in a very methodical manner. Pascal noted that succeeding Daniel Craig represents a difficult challenge for the production team.

Pascal, who has collaborated with long-time Bond producer Barbara Broccoli, stated that the next era of 007 must bring a distinct and exciting direction. She added that the new portrayal needs to shake up the franchise and stand out from previous iterations.
