Russian security forces in the Ryazan Region have detained a local resident for allegedly collecting information on military and energy facilities for Ukrainian intelligence, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported on Tuesday, citing the Federal Security Service.
According to security officials, the suspect held Ukrainian citizenship until 2022. The man established contact with a representative of Ukrainian intelligence through a messaging app and fulfilled instructions to gather and transmit requested data about sensitive regional installations.
The target sites included facilities belonging to the Russian Ministry of Defence, defense-industrial enterprises, and fuel and energy complexes across the region. Security officials confirmed that a criminal case has been opened under Russia's legal statute covering state treason, and the suspect has been remanded in custody.
Federal Security Service oversight
The Federal Security Service, known as the FSB, is Russia's primary domestic security and counter-intelligence agency. Operating as the chief successor to the Soviet-era KGB, the agency oversees domestic security, border control, surveillance, and the investigation of major state crimes including espionage and treason.
Under Russian law, state treason charges carry severe legal consequences, with convicted individuals facing lengthy sentences in high-security penal colonies. Russian authorities have expanded security enforcement and surveillance against suspected intelligence-gathering activities across border and western regions.
Regional strategic importance
The Ryazan Region is situated in western Russia, located approximately 200 kilometers southeast of Moscow. The region serves as an important industrial and transportation hub, hosting energy infrastructure, manufacturing plants, and military facilities connected to national defense operations.
Security services across Russia have increasingly targeted online communications in connection with espionage investigations, warning that foreign intelligence operatives frequently use messaging platforms to recruit local informants.
