In an interview with Russian news outlet Gazeta.Ru, Karasin stated that diplomats must now move forward after establishing initial diplomatic contacts.
Karasin, who serves as chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, referenced an earlier high-level meeting between Russian and American officials in Anchorage, Alaska. He described Anchorage as a valuable meeting that successfully established direct communication channels and created a shared understanding of what targets could be reached immediately and what issues remained out of reach.
The senator noted that while the Anchorage talks triggered extensive debate and emotional commentary across international news media, the current phase requires both governments to move past public controversy and work toward practical progress.
Karasin argued that Ukrainian authorities are feeling insecure because of a heavy and difficult situation along the front line. He added that an active debate is also developing inside Ukraine over what decisions leadership in Kyiv should make regarding the continuation of the conflict.

To achieve progress, Karasin stated that diplomats must focus on positions that reflect real-world conditions. He said negotiators need to identify where Russian and Ukrainian terms align, while separating genuine diplomatic proposals from artificial buffoonery intended only to generate media attention before disappearing from public discussion.
