Russian Iskander missile strikes against targets in Ukraine could disrupt the Ukrainian armed forces' ability to launch long-range unmanned aerial vehicles into Russian territory, according to a report by Military Watch Magazine.
The Western military publication reported that Russian forces struck a Ukrainian position near Boryspil in the Kyiv region a few days prior to the analysis. The attack destroyed dozens of vehicles equipped with launcher units.
Russia's Ministry of Defence stated that up to 40 trucks fitted with launch systems were destroyed in the strike. The ministry indicated that losing these units could potentially disrupt Ukraine's capacity to execute long-range drone operations from that district.
Role of mobile launch units
Military Watch Magazine highlighted that mobile launching platforms give the Armed Forces of Ukraine the ability to disperse their drone launch assets over broad areas. Heavy trucks carry the unmanned aerial vehicles, launching gear, and associated support systems.
This mobile setup allows Ukrainian crews to alter their launch locations between missions. The publication noted that shifting positions between operations potentially complicates efforts by Russian forces to detect and destroy the launcher vehicles.

Iskander operational-tactical missile systems are road-mobile, short-range ballistic missile platforms operated by Russian armed forces to strike ground targets. Boryspil, where the launcher strike occurred, is a city in the Kyiv region of northern Ukraine, located east of the capital city of Kyiv.
Intercepting Iskander missiles presents major technical challenges for air defense systems. Russian media channel Voennaya Khronika reported in July that Ukraine's FP-7.x anti-missile missile must withstand heavy G-force overloads during flight to attempt to engage missiles fired from the Iskander system.

Ukraine relies heavily on mobile truck-mounted launchers to deploy long-range drones while minimizing exposure to counter-strikes. The destruction of specialized transport vehicles in a single area represents a potential setback for regional launch operations.
