Russian forces suffered a record 2,090 daily casualties in Ukraine on September 27, marking their highest single-day loss of the war, according to British intelligence.
Analysts from the UK Ministry of Defence stated that the single-day loss figure includes both killed and wounded personnel. The assessment noted that the total represents only the fourth occasion since the start of the conflict in which daily Russian army losses exceeded 2,000 troops.
All three previous record days where daily losses surpassed the 2,000 threshold were recorded in 2024.
The UK Ministry of Defence regularly issues assessments on battlefield developments in Ukraine based on defense intelligence gathering. Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, initiating the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.
Russian offensive in Donetsk fortress belt
British intelligence analysts emphasized that Russian casualty rates have remained consistently high since the summer months. They attributed the sustained losses to ongoing attempts by the Kremlin to advance in the fortress belt area of Donetsk Oblast, particularly near Dobropillia.
The fortress belt refers to a network of defensive positions and urban strongholds constructed across eastern Ukraine. Donetsk Oblast, located in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region, has been a principal theater of military operations throughout the conflict, with Dobropillia serving as a key urban stronghold within the regional defense line.
Ukrainian counter-advances and prisoner captures
Alongside the casualty report, the Ukrainian Armed Forces pushed back occupiers on a key sector of the eastern front. Ukrainian forces captured more than 250 Russian soldiers during the combat action.
On September 28, Ukrainian Defense Forces liberated three more settlements in the Lyman direction. Lyman is a major rail hub and strategic town in northern Donetsk Oblast that has been the site of repeated battles during the war.
