Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that partner nations belonging to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation support a rapid and peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Speaking to journalists following an international summit held in Kyrgyzstan, Putin said proposals put forward by partner countries were being carefully examined by Moscow, according to state news agency RIA Novosti.
The Russian president described the stance of ally states as sincere and deserving of respect, while emphasizing that no partners were exerting improper pressure on Moscow. He noted that potential paths toward resolving the conflict are raised regularly during diplomatic discussions in a constructive manner, but reiterated that any final decision rests entirely with Russia.
Shanghai Cooperation Organisation
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is a Eurasian political, economic, international security and defence alliance founded in 2001. Its membership features major Eurasian powers including China, India, Russia, Iran, and Pakistan, together with Central Asian states such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus.
The summit was hosted in Kyrgyzstan, a mountainous landlocked country situated in Central Asia bordering China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Leaders of member states meet periodically at SCO summits to address regional security, economic integration, and international diplomatic issues.
Addressing media representatives at the venue, Putin indicated that Russia remains open to continuing dialogue with its Eurasian partners regarding peace initiatives. However, he made clear that while Moscow reviews suggestions attentively, the country retains full sovereign authority over its peace terms.
Mobilisation and parliamentary elections
Before making his statements at the summit, the Russian head of state addressed public rumors regarding a potential new wave of military mobilisation in Russia following upcoming parliamentary elections to the State Duma. The State Duma serves as the lower house of the Federal Assembly of Russia, holding responsibility for drafting and enacting national legislation.
