Internal deliberations within the Spanish Socialist Workers Party have identified Transport Minister Óscar Puente and Justice Minister Félix Bolaños as the primary candidates to succeed Pedro Sánchez as party leader and Prime Minister of Spain.
Socialist Party sources indicate that party discussions regarding the succession to the position of secretary general have focused on the two cabinet ministers as the leading contenders to head both the party and the government.
Puente, who serves as Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, maintains strong support among grassroots party members and is viewed within party ranks for his direct approach to political communication and democratic values. His standing among socialist colleagues in the North African enclave of Ceuta and among railway workers rose significantly after he published a social media message stating that Sánchez had resolved a major border crisis in the city.
The transport minister has also gained attention for advising King Felipe VI on social etiquette regarding appropriate greetings. Prior to joining the national cabinet in late 2023, Puente served as mayor of Valladolid, establishing a political reputation for defending core party principles among rank and file militants.
Candidates in the PSOE succession debate
Bolaños, who serves as Minister of Justice, Democratic Memory and Relations with the Cortes, has been highlighted by party sources as the other chief contender in the succession debate. He was a leading advocate of the April 2022 diplomatic reconciliation agreement with Morocco, a major foreign policy shift that reshaped relations affecting Ceuta and the Western Sahara region.
In his ministerial role, Bolaños maintains active contact with Moroccan Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi concerning bilateral arrangements for the return of unaccompanied minors. His parliamentary performances have drawn frequent commentary from opposition figures, including People's Party deputy Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo.
Bolaños has also faced scrutiny regarding judicial investigations involving party affairs and relatives of the Prime Minister. Following two adverse court rulings against government positions, Bolaños emphasized his commitment to judicial independence and democratic procedures. Within the party, his active cycling lifestyle has also been noted as appealing to younger, health-conscious voters.
Alternative figures and leadership background
Sánchez has served as secretary general of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party since 2017 and as Prime Minister of Spain since 2018. The potential selection of either cabinet minister would mark a significant shift in the leadership structure of Spain's main governing party.
Socialist sources have omitted other prominent party figures from the current succession lists, including digital transformation minister Óscar López and parliamentary spokesman Patxi López. Both figures are widely regarded as key intellectual voices within the Spanish progressive movement but are not currently counted among the primary contenders.
Amid the debate between Puente and Bolaños, regional leader Emiliano García Page has been suggested as a potential alternative successor. García Page, who serves as the president of the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha, represents a more moderate faction within the party, offering a potential alternative candidate if internal consensus proves difficult to reach.
