The Pentagon unexpectedly cancelled a scheduled visit by Polish National Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz to the United States, according to Poland's defence ministry.
Officials in Warsaw stated that the talks in Washington were planned to focus on strengthening the American military presence in the Central European nation and placing new US military bases on Polish territory.
The meeting was called off at the request of the American side, the Polish defence ministry reported. Representatives from both countries are now working to coordinate and agree upon new dates for the talks.
US military presence and NATO security
Kosiniak-Kamysz heads Poland's Ministry of National Defence, which directs national military strategy and alliance cooperation from Warsaw. Poland plays a central role in European security as a key member state along NATO's eastern border.
The Pentagon, located across the Potomac River from Washington in Arlington, Virginia, serves as the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense. It oversees American military installations, deployments, and security partnerships across the globe.
Polish officials have consistently advocated for an expanded and permanent US military footprint within the country. Bilateral discussions regularly address rotational troop deployments, infrastructure development, and defensive capabilities designed to deter regional threats.
Counter-drone tactics and military training
The sudden postponement follows reports by Associated Press journalists that US special forces recently shared specialized tactics with Polish troops to help counter uncrewed aerial vehicles. The tactics were developed using lessons learned from Ukraine's experience in fighting drones.
Those manoeuvres were conducted at the Hohenfels training area in Bavaria, Germany. The extensive facility houses the Joint Multinational Readiness Center, where American forces regularly train allied European troops in advanced battlefield techniques and joint combat operations.
Although the Washington visit is on hold, US and Polish defence officials continue active diplomatic discussions to finalize a revised schedule for the high-level meeting.
