Peru's National Office of Electoral Processes reported that a second training session for polling station members will take place this weekend. The electoral authority said the instruction aims to guarantee that the regional and municipal elections on October 4 develop in an orderly and appropriate manner.
Nearly 809,415 citizens were selected by public draw to serve as table members for the vote, where they will fulfill a fundamental role in the electoral process. Citizens who perform their duties on election day and receive the corresponding training will be entitled to a range of benefits, including financial compensation.
More than 26 million Peruvians are preparing to head to the ballot boxes across the South American country. The voters will elect new local authorities who will lead their respective localities for the next four-year term.
Role of Peru's electoral authority
The National Office of Electoral Processes, known locally as ONPE, is the supreme electoral organization body in Peru. Headquartered in Lima, the independent constitutional institution is tasked with planning, organizing, and executing voting processes across all 24 departments of the country, ensuring that vote totals reflect the will of the electorate.
Table members play a vital front-line role during Peruvian elections. Assigned to specific polling tables, these designated citizens check national identity cards, register voters, distribute paper ballots, and conduct the vote counting process once voting concludes.
Regional and municipal elections in Peru take place every four years to select regional governors, vice governors, regional councillors, provincial mayors, district mayors, and municipal council members. These elected officials direct local public administration, infrastructure projects, and municipal services.
ONPE stated that the upcoming weekend training sessions will focus on ensuring all table members are fully prepared for their responsibilities. The organization urged selected citizens to participate in the session to ensure proper coordination on October 4.
