Nikos Papandreou calls for EU crackdown on wellness centers

Greek MEP Nikos Papandreou has called for stricter European regulation of wellness businesses following the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis in a wellness center.

Speaking on the issue, Papandreou stated that oversight and licensing of wellness clinics must be tightened across the European Union to protect citizens from illegal and falsified health products.

Papandreou noted that things have gotten out of hand, emphasizing that the problem extends beyond traditional health medicines to wellness products and heavily advertised health procedures. He explained that the death of Mazonakis, a beloved singer in Greece who passed away two weeks ago at a wellness facility, raises urgent questions regarding scientific documentation, licensing, and supervision.

According to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, the lawmaker stressed that authorities cannot allow commercial enterprises to exploit human hope by marketing products promising longevity or immortal water. While acknowledging people's natural desire for long life, he insisted that exploiting that hope for profit must be stopped.

Digital Services Act

To combat fraudulent health claims, Papandreou pointed to the Digital Services Act as the primary platform for enforcement. He noted that his political group supports leveraging this regulatory framework to halt the advertising and sale of unauthorized wellness items and deceptive procedures online.

European Parliament oversight

Papandreou serves as a Member of the European Parliament for PASOK, a social democratic political party in Greece. The European Parliament is the directly elected legislative body of the European Union, responsible for negotiating and enacting EU laws and overseeing European institutions alongside the Council of the European Union.

The Digital Services Act is a major European Union regulation designed to update rules for online platforms and digital services operating within the EU single market. The law establishes clear oversight for online commerce and digital advertising, requiring platforms to take action against illegal content and deceptive commercial practices.

Reports on the statements were distributed by the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, the official national news service of Greece. The public news agency provides comprehensive coverage of Greek political affairs, parliamentary debates, and European legislative initiatives.
