Music producer William Orbit dies at his home aged 69

British music producer William Orbit, who gained global acclaim for producing Madonna's Grammy-winning album Ray of Light, died at his home on July 23 aged 69. His family announced his passing in a statement, saying he would be greatly missed by many people whose lives he touched through his music, friendship and kindness. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Orbit was best known for his work with Madonna on her 1998 studio album Ray of Light. His original arrangements incorporated influences from trip-hop, jungle and techno music. The album marked a new creative chapter for the pop star and produced hit singles including Frozen, The Power of Goodbye and the title track Ray of Light.

The record achieved multi-platinum status in several countries and earned Madonna three Grammy awards from five nominations in 1999. Critics and fans widely regard the project as the finest studio album of her career.

Work with Madonna and pop artists

Orbit's production career extended well beyond a single album. He contributed to Blur's experimental album 13, produced All Saints' UK number one single Pure Shores, and co-wrote Pink's number three single Feel Good Time.

Before working on Ray of Light, Orbit remixed Madonna's early 1990s singles Justify My Love and Erotica using hip-house breakbeats. In the late 1990s, Madonna was struggling to reinvent her sound after abandoning sessions with producer Babyface. Her manager invited Orbit to submit musical material after reviewing his previous work.

Orbit later recalled that artists should keep working on their music and refining their skills until good fortune arrives. He and Madonna recorded much of the album together in New York and Los Angeles studios.

Madonna described Orbit as a complete mad genius during the recording sessions. She said she would present him with musical ideas, hum melodies or read lyrics before leaving him alone in the studio. She noted that they initially created eight-minute trance tracks before paring them down into structured verses and choruses.

Soundtracks and solo career

Orbit's sound featured heavy breakbeats, acoustic guitars and electronic elements across ballads and energetic tracks. The album returned Madonna to pop innovation and brought her her first Grammys outside the music video categories. She later selected Mirwais as her main producer for her follow-up album Music, though Orbit produced three songs on that record.

Orbit also produced two standalone soundtrack singles for Madonna. He produced Beautiful Stranger for the 1999 film Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and a cover of Don McLean's American Pie for the 2000 movie The Next Best Thing. He reunited with Madonna in 2012 to co-produce six tracks on her album MDNA. Orbit stated earlier in 2026 that he would always love her and credited her with making his career.

Outside of pop production, Orbit maintained an active solo career. He formed the electronic and ambient trio Torch Song in 1980 with Laurie Mayer and Grant Gilbert. The group signed with IRS Records and released three albums between 1984 and 1987, followed by a fourth album in 1995. Orbit also formed Bassomatic, scoring a UK top 10 hit with the psychedelic track Fascinating Rhythm.

After building a studio with digital and analog gear, he composed the soundtrack for the film Youngblood starring Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze. He released his first solo album in 1987 and gained recognition through his 1990s Strange Cargo album series. Singer Beth Orton appeared on his 1993 album Strange Cargo III, and Orbit produced her debut album Superpinkymandy that same year before remixing her single Central Reservation.

Collaborations with Blur and All Saints

The late 1990s marked a peak period of productivity for Orbit. In 1999, he released Pieces in a Modern Style, featuring electronic versions of classical pieces such as Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. A 1999 Ferry Corsten trance remix of his Barber interpretation reached the UK top five. An earlier 1995 version of the classical album had been pulled from stores following objections from composer Arvo Part.

In 1999, Orbit produced Blur's album 13 after the band sought a new sound following five albums with producer Stephen Street. Blur had been impressed by Orbit's remixes on their compilation Bustin' and Dronin'. The album reflected singer Damon Albarn's breakup with musician Justine Frischmann, and Albarn later described Orbit's role as akin to a psychiatrist. The album featured hit singles Tender and Coffee & TV.

Orbit's success with Madonna led numerous major artists to seek his production skills. He subsequently worked with Britney Spears, Melanie C, Robbie Williams, Chris Brown, Pink, No Doubt and former Girls Aloud member Nadine Coyle. He also co-wrote Pink's 2003 soundtrack single Feel Good Time with Beck for the film Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, appearing on the track as a guest artist.

Later projects and personal health

Orbit brought his signature sound of guitars, electronic effects and breakbeats to British group All Saints. He produced their UK number one singles Black Coffee and Pure Shores. He told the Guardian in 2021 that he initially disliked Pure Shores because it took so long to complete, noting that grueling work requires time before a creator can enjoy it. He reunited with All Saints on two tracks for their 2018 album Testament.

Orbit produced two new tracks for U2's compilation album The Best of 1990-2000. These included the UK top five hit Electrical Storm and The Hands That Built America, which served as the theme for Martin Scorsese's 2002 film Gangs of New York. In 2010, he produced Katy Melua's fourth album The House, which was the only other complete pop album he produced for another artist.

Orbit later completed a long-lost duet between Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson titled There Must Be More to Life Than This. The song was originally recorded in the early 1980s and was released in 2014 under Orbit's production. He also continued releasing solo albums, adding six records after Pieces in a Modern Style, including a 2010 sequel and his 2022 album The Painter.

In March 2026, Orbit publicly dismissed rumors of a new Ray of Light project with Madonna. He described the speculation as tiring and confirmed no collaboration would occur. He stated that he had completed an album that he considered the true successor to Ray of Light and had sent it to Madonna, but received no reply.

Orbit also spoke openly in a 2021 interview about facing a severe mental health crisis four years prior. He described heavy drug use involving cannabis, LSD, mushrooms, MDMA, cocaine, codeine and experimental hormones, which triggered a psychotic episode and led to involuntary hospitalization. He noted that once the substances cleared from his system, he recovered and was released from care.
