Greek fashion designer Lakis Gavalas said goodbye to singer Giorgos Mazonakis in a farewell post on Instagram, describing him as an incredible guy as he wished him a good reunion in the next life.
Gavalas shared the message on Sunday, September 13, while the public wake for Mazonakis was taking place in Nikaia, near Athens. He posted a black-and-white photograph of the singer on his personal account.
In the caption, Gavalas wrote that in life each person must be the skilled operator of their own helm, since that is the only way to get through the storms skillfully and enjoy the calm waters. He added that where a person's journey toward harbor ends depends on the needs of that destination.
He went on to write that his friend, who had run aground three days earlier under force in an unknown harbor, had found work elsewhere. Mazonakis, he said, had gone to another world without harbors, ships, storms or setting sail, a place where pure spirits are nourished by wisdom, play with textures and work in spaces without stairs, elevators, garages or transport, moving instead through slow and unforced signs. Gavalas asked whether it was not better there, addressing the singer as brother, and closed the post by wishing him a good reunion and calling him an incredible guy.
Mazonakis died during clinic treatment
Giorgos Mazonakis, one of Greece's best-known laiko singers, died on Wednesday at the age of 54. He suffered a cardiac arrest while visiting the private Stem Cell clinic in the Kolonaki district of Athens for a plasmapheresis treatment session.
His death prompted an outpouring of tributes from figures across the Greek entertainment world, and a public wake was held for him in Nikaia, the Athens neighborhood where he grew up.
