Kyiv Struggles to Repair Homes Hit by Russian Strikes

Kyiv Struggles to Repair Homes Hit by Russian Strikes

Kyiv has yet to finish repairing some apartment buildings damaged by Russian strikes in 2024, according to an investigation by Bihus.Info. Residents have waited years for renovations to be completed while promised deadlines have been repeatedly postponed.

Journalists cited the example of a building on Salskoho Street, which was hit by a Russian missile strike on July 8, 2024. Residents said a technical inspection that should have taken two weeks instead took four months, followed by about six months to develop a restoration project and then tender procedures. In total, preparation for the rebuilding alone took eight months.

Builders did not begin work until June 2025, almost a year after the strike. As of summer 2026, the repairs are still not finished, though residents have been told the building will be ready by the end of 2026.

Scale of the damage in Kyiv

As of June 1, 3,578 buildings in Kyiv had been damaged, with 71 suffering the most severe destruction. Over the following two summer months, the number of structures damaged by Russian attacks grew by several hundred more, adding further strain on the rebuilding system.

Another building, more delays

Bihus.Info reported a similar situation at a building on Mokra Street in Kyiv. Repairs following a Russian strike in early 2024 have been postponed multiple times: completion was first promised by the end of 2025, then pushed to summer 2026, and the timeline has since shifted again. Residents also complained about the quality of work already carried out.

The municipal enterprise responsible for restoring the building confirmed that some complaints about the quality of work were valid. It said the defects were being fixed, though it added that not all resident complaints reflected reality. The enterprise said it plans to finish landscaping and facade work within one to one and a half months.

Rising intensity of attacks

The investigation's authors said the city still has not dealt with the consequences of the 2024-2025 attacks, even as the intensity of Russian strikes continues to grow. They said this puts the timely restoration of buildings damaged in newer attacks at risk.

Separately, in April 2026 a school destroyed at the start of the full-scale war was rebuilt in Hostomel. The total cost of Ukraine's reconstruction stood at nearly $588 billion as of December 2025.
