Peruvian writer Karina Pacheco Medrano has received the Order of Arts and Letters from the French Ministry of Culture during a ceremony in Lima.
The distinction was presented last July at the French Embassy in Lima by Ambassador Nathalie Kennedy, recognizing Pacheco for her literary trajectory and her ongoing contribution to Peruvian culture.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Kennedy commended the author for the depth of her work. The ambassador remarked in her speech that while some writers tell stories, others make people see the world in a different way, stating that Pacheco undoubtedly belonged to the second group.
The award represents one of the highest cultural honors granted to a Peruvian author who emerged in the 21st century. The Order of Arts and Letters, established by France to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts and literature, has been granted to very few Peruvian personalities.
Previous Peruvian recipients of the prestigious honor include Nobel laureate writer Mario Vargas Llosa, painter Fernando de Szyszlo, artist Gerardo Chavez, and chef Gaston Acurio.
Literary Career and Reader Recognition
Until 2013, Pacheco operated largely outside the focus of mainstream press and literary critics, with only rare exceptions. Instead, her reputation grew through genuine word of mouth among readers, who built a dedicated community by sharing and recommending her titles.
By the time literary critics and media outlets began analyzing her production, Pacheco had already authored five fiction books and one non-fiction title. When formal critical praise arrived, it served not to discover a new voice, but to validate what readers had long observed about her poetics, which frequently address universal themes of memory and violence.
Pacheco has built an extensive body of work over two decades. Her published novels include La voluntad del molle in 2006, No olvides nuestros nombres in 2009, La sangre, el polvo, la nieve in 2010, Cabeza y orquideas in 2012, El bosque de tu nombre in 2013, Las orillas del aire in 2017, and El ano del viento in 2021.
Her short story collections comprise Alma alga published in 2010, El sendero de los rayos in 2013, Lluvia in 2018, and Ninos del pajaro azul in 2024. In non-fiction, she published Incas, indios y fiestas. Reivindicaciones y representaciones en la configuracion de la identidad cusquena in 2007, followed by Viaje al sur de Cusco, published by the Institute of Peruvian Studies in 2025.
National Awards and Publishing Record
Her literary work has earned major formal accolades in Peru. In 2022, Pacheco was awarded the National Literature Award in the novel category for El ano del viento, the official state literary distinction presented by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture.
Many of her titles have seen multiple editions sell out following strong reader demand and critical acclaim. Over her career, her books have been released by publishing houses including San Marcos, Planeta, and the Institute of Peruvian Studies. Her fiction works are currently published by Penguin Random House.
