Canadian director James Cameron has indicated he is considering new film projects outside the Avatar franchise as he plans his final career chapter. Speaking on the occasion of receiving the 2026 Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement in Canada, Cameron addressed his future plans after decades devoted to the series.
Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 remain scheduled for release in 2029 and 2031 respectively, with part of the fourth movie already filmed. Cameron has directed all three released Avatar titles, including last year's Fire And Ash, but has announced he may alter his future involvement.
Reflections on a long career
Cameron said that his life has been inextricably linked with the Avatar universe for the past 21 years, beginning in 2005. He noted that his only break was to build the submarine used to dive to the planet's deepest point before returning to work on the franchise.
The Canadian director, screenwriter, and producer explained that he is currently in a phase of reflecting on what other stories he wants to tell. He said he is questioning how many of those projects require him to sit behind the camera and how many he could support as a writer or producer collaborating with other filmmakers.
Media outlet NME reported on August 6, 2026, that Cameron suggested he was ready to move on after 21 years in the world of Pandora. The report stated he is pondering projects that would produce the greatest benefit.
Focus on positive impact
Cameron revealed that he is evaluating prospective projects based on whether they can have a positive impact on reality. He explained that he looks at stories he enjoys and asks how they will improve the world and make it better for his children.
The filmmaker clarified that he has not made final decisions yet, describing his current status as a transitional phase. He added that he does not know if the final chapter of his career will last one year or 20 years.
Following the release of Fire And Ash, Cameron also indicated that he intends to step back from taking an active role in every stage of the production process.
