Ireland is preparing to witness its largest solar eclipse in more than 26 years on Wednesday evening, with up to 96 per cent of the sun set to be covered across parts of the country.
The historic celestial event will begin shortly after 18:00 BST, reaching its deepest moment about an hour later before ending shortly after 20:00 BST.
Viewers will see the moon appear to take a bite out of the right-hand corner of the sun before sliding across to obscure almost its entire surface, leaving a slim inverted crescent before the sun re-emerges.
Eclipse Timings and Best Viewing Locations
Although Ireland will not experience a total eclipse, the phenomenon represents the largest solar eclipse visible from the island since 1999. First Contact begins as the moon first passes in front of the sun shortly after 18:00 Irish Standard Time, leading to Maximum Eclipse an hour later and Last Contact as the moon completes its pass shortly after 20:00.

The single best location in Ireland to observe the eclipse will be Mizen Head in west Cork, a headland located at the southwestern tip of the country, where approximately 97 per cent of the sun will be obscured.
Astronomers advise that the ideal vantage point for viewers anywhere in Ireland is a location facing west with minimal surrounding buildings to obstruct the skyline.
Severe Eye Damage Risks and Warnings
Health professionals and eye care experts have issued urgent warnings that looking directly at a solar eclipse with the naked eye can cause permanent vision loss or blindness, known as solar retinopathy, due to intense solar radiation burning the retina.
Because the retina lacks pain receptors, severe cellular damage occurs silently without any physical discomfort while looking at the sun. Dimmed sunlight during an eclipse can create a false sense of security, tricking pupils into dilating and suppressing the natural reflex to look away, allowing harmful radiation deep into the eye.

Mohamed Elalfy, a consultant ophthalmologist and president of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, explained the hidden dangers of direct viewing. "Crucially, the retina has no pain receptors, so people will not feel the damage as it happens," Elalfy said.
"Symptoms may only become apparent several hours later and can include blurred vision, a central blind or dark spot, distorted vision, reduced colour perception and increased sensitivity to light. While some people recover over weeks or months, others can be left with permanent visual impairment," Elalfy added.
Victim Shares Warning After 1999 Eclipse Injury
The severe consequences of inadequate eye protection are highlighted by Peter Smith, from Taunton in Somerset, England, who suffered permanent damage to both retinas after watching a solar eclipse 27 years ago using a borrowed welder's mask.
Smith believed the mask would shield his eyes, but experienced flashing lights and severe headaches the following day before specialists diagnosed permanent retinal burns.
Speaking to the BBC this week, Smith urged eclipse viewers to ensure they use certified protective gear. "Make sure its got the right protection and filters to stop any damage because any damage you get, it'll never heal. It's not like cutting your hand," Smith said.
Smith revealed that he continues to suffer long-term health consequences decades after the incident. "Even now there is a residual impact. When I'm tired sometimes a flashing dot might come back, and it's not nice when it does," Smith said.
Where to Get Certified Glasses in Ireland
To view the eclipse safely, experts recommend specially manufactured eclipse glasses meeting the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard. Standard sunglasses, smoked glass, and homemade filters do not block invisible ultraviolet and infrared radiation.
In Dublin, Astronomy Ireland announced that certified ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses are available for purchase at the Designist Shop in Dublin 2, located at eircode D02 AE06, until the shop closes at 5pm.

In Cork, MTU Blackrock Castle Observatory has partnered with Cork City Council's Night Time Economy initiative to host free public viewing events from 18:00 to 20:30. Free certified eclipse glasses donated by the Rochester Museum and Science Center in New York will be distributed alongside access to observatory ambassadors.
The public viewing events in Cork will take place with no booking required at three designated sites: Blackrock Castle Observatory, Tramore Valley Park, and Bell's Field. Organisers noted that glasses will be handed out in a controlled manner from 6pm onwards, with a strict limit per group to ensure sustainability, sharing, and community-wide distribution during the two-hour event.
Dangers of Old Viewers and Sunglasses Myths
Experts have explicitly warned against using old eclipse glasses retrieved from household storage. Decades-old protective film can degrade over time, leaving viewers exposed to severe eye damage.
Dr Greg Brown, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich in London, cautioned against using outdated gear. "It is possible for the film on older solar eclipse glasses to degrade over time," Dr Brown told the Mail. "So it is recommended to only use eclipse glasses manufactured with the last decade."
Kyla Black, Director of Optical Practice at Boots Opticians, emphasised checking even newly acquired viewers. "If you're purchasing specially made eclipse glasses, make sure to double-check that they are undamaged before use as even a glimpse of damage could have an impact on your eyesight," Black said.
Black explained that users can inspect glasses by holding them up to the brightest light fixture inside their home, ensuring that not even a slight pinprick of light passes through the filter. She also dismissed the idea that wearing multiple pairs of dark sunglasses provides safety.
"It's a common myth that wearing multiple pairs of sunglasses can protect you from any harmful UV light," Black said. "This is untrue and should be avoided at all costs as only purpose-built eclipse glasses can allow you to watch an eclipse."
Safe Indirect Viewing Methods Without Glasses
Members of the public who do not possess certified glasses can still enjoy the spectacle safely through indirect projection techniques that cast an image of the sun onto a separate surface.

Dr Megan Argo, an astrophysicist at Lancaster University, outlined natural and household projection methods. "The safest way for the public to enjoy the eclipse is to view it indirectly. Standing beneath a leafy tree creates hundreds of tiny images of the Sun on the ground, which gradually change into crescents as the eclipse progresses," Dr Argo told the Daily Mail.
"Projecting the Sun safely with a colander, a pinhole viewer or by using a tree canopy, will help people see the shape of the Sun's disk change as the Moon covers part of it for a couple of hours," Dr Argo added.
The Royal Astronomical Society in the UK recommends constructing a simple pinhole projector using a sheet of card and blank paper. Pushing the tip of a ballpoint pen through the centre of the card creates an aperture. Holding the card in one hand and the paper in the other while standing with your back to the sun projects a miniature image of the sun and moon onto the paper.
Kitchen colanders provide another effective projection technique. David Jones, a consultant ophthalmologist at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust, demonstrated holding a colander over a sheet of paper with his back turned to the sun in a social media video. "If you hold the colander to the Sun and you look away from the Sun, protecting your eyes, you can make not just one picture of the Sun but a hundred all at once," Jones said.
The UK Health Security Agency also shared advice on social media platform X on August 11, 2026, writing: "Don't 'strain' your eyes trying to see the solar eclipse... If you don't have eclipse glasses, a kitchen colander can be used to safely project the eclipse onto a surface."
A clearer projected image can be created using a cereal box pinhole viewer, which shields surrounding ambient sunlight. To make one, tape a piece of white paper inside the bottom of an empty cereal box to serve as a viewing screen, then seal the top shut. Cut two small square openings on opposite sides of the top lid. Cover one square with aluminum foil and poke a small hole in the center with a pin or needle, leaving the second square open as a viewfinder.
Standing with your back to the sun, look through the open square with one eye while aligning the foil hole with the sun to project a crisp live image of the eclipse onto the bottom screen.
Official digital broadcasts and internet live streams provide another completely safe alternative for watching the national event from any location.
