Millions of Britons watched the moon obscure the sun in a solar eclipse on Wednesday evening, but a shortage of protective glasses led spectators to stare directly at the sun, prompting widespread complaints of severe eye pain.

Dozens of videos and posts appeared on social media platforms such as TikTok and X, where viewers described agonizing symptoms, blurred vision, and fears of permanent sight loss following the celestial spectacle.

In one TikTok video, an anxious poster said: "I stared at it. My eyes are killing me. It's a feeling I've not felt before and I think I'm going to go blind." Another user reported taking a "quick peep thinking I'd be fine," but experienced "headaches and blurred vision." A third commenter noted: "They weren't lying I looked directly at the eclipse and now there's a big reddish hue in my centre vision."

Panic spread across X as well, with one user writing: "Looked at the eclipse for about 5 seconds and I'm now seeing spots maybe people weren't being dramatic about it damaging your eyes." Another posted: "Looked at it for literally a sec and now my eyes hurt."

Search engine data reflected the sudden surge in public concern. Google searches for the term "eyes hurt" rose by 5,000 per cent on Wednesday evening compared to the same period last year, while searches for "eye damage" increased by 700 per cent week on week after the eclipse ended.

Medical warnings and retinopathy symptoms

Ophthalmic specialists warned that staring directly at the sun can inflict lasting harm on human vision. Mohamed Elalfy, a consultant ophthalmologist and president of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, told the Daily Mail that looking directly at the sun during an eclipse causes damage to the retina, particularly the macula, which provides sharp central vision.

Elalfy explained that solar radiation is focused by the natural optics of the eye onto a very small area of the retina, triggering a photochemical reaction and thermal damage to retinal cells during prolonged exposure.

Mfazo Hove, a consultant ophthalmic surgeon and founder of Blue Fin Vision, told the Daily Mail that there is no safe number of seconds for looking at the sun. Hove noted that symptoms of solar retinopathy often develop several hours after exposure rather than appearing immediately.

According to Hove, symptoms include blurred or reduced central vision, a grey or dark spot in the centre of vision, distortion where straight lines appear bent or wavy, altered colour perception, and increased light sensitivity.

The Royal College of Ophthalmology highlights five key indicators of eclipse related eye injury:

  • Blurred central vision
  • A central blind or dark spot
  • Distortion of vision
  • Reduced colour perception
  • Increased sensitivity to light

Recovery timelines vary based on severity. Hove stated that mild cases of solar retinopathy may resolve spontaneously over several weeks, with substantial recovery occurring within three to six months. However, severe cases can leave a permanent central blind spot, distortion, or reduced vision, as no medical treatment currently exists to reverse retinal damage once it occurs.

Hove cautioned anyone with blurred central vision or dark spots against looking at the sun again to test their vision. Instead, affected individuals should schedule a prompt examination with an optometrist or ophthalmologist to establish a diagnosis and rule out other causes of sudden visual loss.

Kyla Black, Director of Optical Practice at Boots Opticians, said: "Last night’s once-in-a-generation event brought millions together across the world for a breathtaking experience. However, this event was not without its risks. While most people recover over weeks or months, others can be left with permanent visual problems." Official hospital admission figures for eye injuries have not yet been released.

Eclipse timings and viewing locations

Wednesday's event was the first major solar eclipse visible in Britain since August 1999, when overcast weather spoiled viewing for much of the nation. In contrast, clear skies prevailed across most of England on Wednesday night, enabling widespread observation from Inverness to Penzance.

The astronomical spectacle began at 6:08 pm in Edinburgh, 6:17 pm in London, and 6:18 pm in Cornwall. Over the next hour, the moon moved across the sun, obscuring more than 90 per cent of its light in London at its peak, with coverage reaching about 91 per cent above landmarks such as Big Ben, Parliament Hill, the River Thames, and Greenwich Park.

The highest level of obscuration in the UK occurred at Bishop Rock in the Isles of Scilly, where 96.5 per cent of the sun was blocked, while up to 96 per cent was obscured in other UK regions. Internationally, the city of Burgos in Spain provided the best view, experiencing 100 per cent totality for nearly two minutes.

Spectators gathered in public spaces across the country to watch the event. On Primrose Hill in London, where 500 people assembled, 35-year-old lawyer Laura Stewart described the experience as "utterly enchanting." Aja Lilit, a 24-year-old spectator from Uxbridge in west London, said: "I can see the Moon and the Sun. I am nothing - but also a part of this. This is just so amazing."

Crowds at Greenwich Park in south-east London greeted the spectacle with gasps of "wow," "oh my god," and "this is so cool." Because eclipse glasses were in short supply, viewers devised alternative methods. Spectators in Blackwood, Wales, used homemade welding glasses, while Arsenal FC fans gathered at Emirates Stadium used cardboard and colanders ahead of a pre-season friendly against Como Calcio.

Experts recommended indirect viewing techniques, such as projecting an image of the sun through a colander or card with small holes. Cloud cover obstructed views in Scotland and Northern Ireland, where viewers relied on an online live stream hosted by the Royal Observatory Greenwich.

Animal confusion and historical eclipse lore

As the sky darkened across Britain, an eerie drop in light accompanied a noticeable drop in temperature. The sudden change threw birds across the country into confusion, causing large flocks to fly chaotically through the air while other birds became silent.

Social media users posted footage of unusual avian behavior. One observer remarked that "the birds knew something was happening," while another asked if anyone else noticed birds acting strangely after seeing a "massive flock of crows" take flight.

Dr Kristina Paradowski, a clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, explained that animals rely heavily on light cues to regulate daily routines, making birds particularly sensitive to sudden shifts in sunlight.

The disorienting effect of eclipses aligns with ancient historical lore. In Maya culture, solar eclipses were viewed as manifestations of wrath from the sun god Kinich Ahau, requiring rituals alongside the moon goddess Ixchel. The Maya believed that entities called Xulab or Xibal tried to eat the sun, prompting communal chants to ward them off. Maya tradition also held that staring directly at an eclipse would cause birds to peck out a person's eyes, causing blindness.

Transport chaos and roadside breakdown surge

The celestial event coincided with the start of Britain's fifth heatwave of the year, which brought temperatures up to 34C (93F) before an eerie chill descended as the moon blocked the 30C sunshine in parks such as Greenwich Park.

Thousands of visitors traveled to parks with sunset views, resulting in widespread street obstruction from discarded rental e-bikes. Photos outside Primrose Hill showed hundreds of Lime and Forest electric bikes dumped in heaps, completely blocking pavements and parts of the road.

A Lime spokesman told the Daily Mail: "Our on-street team was quick to respond and moved and tidied bikes quickly in areas where demand for our service was extremely high. Many people also chose to cycle home afterwards, which helped clear bikes from those locations."

The AA reported a major surge in car breakdowns during the event. Assistance requests peaked at around 8:00 pm, running approximately 30 per cent above expected levels. An AA spokesman told the Daily Mail: "Our data shows breakdown workload peaking at around 8pm, when it was approximately 30 per cent above expected levels. This increase might reflect that more drivers left urban areas to get a better view of the eclipse."

The AA noted that drivers traveling from cities to the countryside encountered hot weather and heavy traffic, leading to vehicle overheating, cooling system faults, and tyre issues. However, the AA confirmed that overall accident and insurance claim numbers did not exceed normal levels.

The breakdown surge followed warnings regarding potential traffic hazards during eclipses. A study by University of Toronto researchers analyzing the 2017 solar eclipse in the United States recorded a significant spike in road traffic collisions. Lead investigator Professor Donald Redelmeier stated: "We found a significant increase in traffic risk in the US around the time of the total eclipse, averaging to one extra vehicle crash every 25 minutes and one extra crash fatality every 95 minutes."

Redelmeier added that the 2017 eclipse resulted in 46 extra deaths, explaining that the risk stemmed from increased traffic volume, travel on unfamiliar routes, speeding, driver distraction, alcohol or drug impairment, and viewing from unsafe roadside locations rather than light changes.
