Spanish streamer Ibai Llanos has announced the 2026 World Cup of Foods, sparking widespread online support for Peruvian ceviche.

Ibai Llanos Announces 2026 World Cup of Foods Tournament

Spanish content creator Ibai Llanos announced on Saturday the launch of the 2026 World Cup of Foods, an online voting tournament for international dishes. The announcement immediately sparked online excitement in Peru, where social media users quickly rallied behind ceviche as the country's main contender.

The new competition follows Llanos's 2025 World Cup of Breakfasts, an online elimination tournament won by Peru's pan con chicharrón, a fried pork belly sandwich. Peruvian supporters now hope that ceviche can secure a second consecutive culinary title for the country.

Llanos revealed the project in a video posted on his social media channels on August 15. Only 16 main dishes from 16 different countries will qualify for the final bracket of the 2026 tournament.

Tournament Format and Selection Process

Unlike the previous edition, Llanos explained that the online community will directly select the participating countries and dishes. He urged followers to share their location and nominate their nation's most iconic, widely recognized, or finest main dish.

During his video message, Llanos listed several prospective contenders that are already generating debate online. He selected paella for Spain, while highlighting Argentine asado, Mexican tacos, American hamburgers, and Peruvian ceviche as strong candidates.

Llanos emphasized that he will not select the participants himself. Instead, public suggestions in the comment sections will determine which 16 nations and main dishes enter the head-to-head knockout rounds.

Peruvian Reaction and Public Support

Peruvian social media users responded with enthusiasm to the announcement, aiming to repeat the digital mobilization that led to their victory in 2025. Ceviche, a traditional dish of raw fish marinated in fresh citrus juice, quickly emerged as Peru's top candidate.

Prominent Peruvian public figures and national entities have already joined the online movement to support ceviche. Chef Giacomo Bocchio, model Luciana Fuster, and actress Katia Condos have publicly backed the dish on digital platforms.

Official organizations and commercial brands in Peru have also embraced the campaign. The Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation, known as Midagri Peru, alongside cinema chain Cineplanet, published messages promoting ceviche for the competition.

Legacy of the Breakfast World Cup

Llanos recalled the impact of the inaugural 2025 tournament, describing it as a historic cultural phenomenon. The competition generated widespread public interest in several countries, triggering street celebrations and extensive television news coverage.

The 2025 tournament featured 16 nations in direct elimination matchups. Peru captured the title when pan con chicharrón defeated Venezuela's submission, the cornmeal arepa, in a competitive final vote.

Chile and Bolivia rounded out the top four in the 2025 competition. Chile reached the semifinals with the marraqueta, a crisp bread roll, while Bolivia advanced with salteñas, baked savory pastries filled with meat and broth.

Organizers expect the 2026 World Cup of Foods to generate massive online voting engagement across social platforms. Peruvian fans remain confident that ceviche will showcase the nation's culinary heritage and claim another international title.
