Google has launched the Pixel Watch 5 smartwatch, introducing features to track blood pressure and signs of insulin resistance alongside an updated offline Gemini artificial intelligence assistant and up to 40 hours of battery life. The new device carries a starting price of $399, with retail sales set to begin on August 20.

The smartwatch comes in 41 mm and 44 mm case sizes and includes upgraded physical activity tracking capabilities. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 processor, which delivers higher performance together with improved GPS route tracking and enhanced sleep monitoring functions.

Health Tracking and Emergency Alerts

Among the key innovations on the Pixel Watch 5 is its ability to monitor changes in blood pressure and identify signs of insulin resistance. The device evaluates data from sleep metrics, heart rate, physical activity, and other health indicators to generate detailed monthly reports on user health trends.

Blood pressure tracking measures systemic arterial force, offering vital indicators of cardiovascular condition. Insulin resistance occurs when cells in muscles, fat, and the liver fail to respond effectively to insulin, a hormone that regulates blood glucose levels. Identifying early signs of insulin resistance helps highlight risks for metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.

The Pixel Watch 5 can also detect a prolonged drop in blood oxygen levels. If the smartwatch identifies a sustained reduction in blood oxygen together with suspected critical breathing disruption, it can automatically call emergency services to request assistance.

Blood oxygen saturation measures the percentage of oxygen-carrying hemoglobin in the bloodstream. Significant drops in oxygen levels during sleep or exercise can indicate severe respiratory distress or sleep apnea, making automated emergency calls a critical safety mechanism for wearable health devices.

Offline Gemini Assistant Integration

Google has updated its Gemini assistant on the Pixel Watch 5 to provide greater functionality, including the ability to operate without an active internet connection. Wearers can use hands free voice commands while offline to manage timers, set alarms, and control workout sessions.

The assistant also provides contextual prompts and automated reminders based on user schedule details. The watch delivers alerts regarding upcoming flights, navigation routes, and other important scheduled events directly to the user's wrist.

Gemini is Google's artificial intelligence assistant system designed to process language commands and assist with daily tasks. Allowing the assistant to run locally on the watch ensures that essential voice controls remain available when cellular network or Wi-Fi connections are unavailable.

Processor and Availability

The inclusion of the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 processor provides an updated silicon platform designed specifically for wearable technology. Semiconductor manufacturer Qualcomm designed the chip to handle sensor data processing efficiently while maintaining battery endurance across multi-day use.

Google, headquartered in Mountain View, California, launched its Pixel Watch product line to integrate its Wear OS software with hardware devices. The Pixel Watch 5 goes on sale on August 20 in 41 mm and 44 mm size versions with a base price of $399.
