Lithuanian top-flight football club FK Zalgiris Vilnius has offered American actor Jason Sudeikis the opportunity to coach its women's team in an official league match this autumn.
The 50-year-old actor, who has Lithuanian ancestral origins, would be given complete operational control of the team on match day if he accepts the proposal, according to club executives.
Under the terms of the invitation, Sudeikis would be integrated directly into the daily operations of the squad. He would be granted full authority to formulate match tactics, direct pre-game warm-ups, and coach from the touchline during a genuine championship fixture, supported by the club's existing professional coaching staff.
Coaching role and team philosophy
In an official statement, FK Zalgiris confirmed that it was offering the star of the hit television series Ted Lasso the chance to lead its top women's team during a real domestic league match.
FK Zalgiris president Andrius Tapinas explained that the initiative was designed to put the show's signature Believe slogan into practice in real-world sport. He noted that the players were hungry for the kind of positive encouragement and fresh management perspective that the character brings to the bench.
Sudeikis gained international acclaim portraying Ted Lasso, an optimistic American college football coach who is unexpectedly hired to manage a professional English soccer team. In the show's fourth season, currently broadcasting on streaming service Apple TV+, the moustachioed manager takes charge of the women's team at fictional club AFC Richmond.
Spotlight on women's football in Vilnius
The high-profile invitation comes as FK Zalgiris makes its return to the top flight of Lithuanian women's football for the first time since 2012. Club management sees the potential appearance of the Hollywood actor as a significant opportunity to shine a spotlight on the team and domestic women's athletics.
Municipal officials in Vilnius have also expressed strong support for the proposal. Eglė Girdzijauskaitė, head of communications at Go Vilnius, the agency responsible for tourism and economic development in the capital, said the city had long embraced bold, offbeat ideas that draw global attention. She added that the overarching narrative of Ted Lasso, which spans an entire season while celebrating women's sports, fits seamlessly with the community spirit of Vilnius.
It remains to be seen whether Sudeikis will accept the offer and take charge of a real-world bench in the Lithuanian capital.
