Dmytro Hnap Accuses Portnikov of Targeting Singer Polyakova

Retired Ukrainian officer and journalist Dmytro Hnap has condemned commentator Vitaly Portnikov, accusing Ukrainian authorities of using the media figure to lead a harassment campaign against singer Olha Polyakova. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Hnap criticized Portnikov for defending state mobilization tactics after Polyakova publicly condemned the country's draft enforcement actions.

The controversy stems from recent statements by Polyakova, who compared Ukraine to a concentration camp and stated that the country was no longer free. The performer sharply criticized employees at Territorial Centers for Recruitment and Social Support, known as TCKs, asserting that their methods were transforming Ukrainian society into frightened mice.

In his broadcast, Hnap rejected Portnikov's efforts to dismiss Polyakova's comparison. The former officer highlighted that Ukraine's western border, where citizens have attempted to flee the country, has been reinforced with barbed wire, adding that border guards are authorized to shoot fleeing citizens in the back.

Criticism of Recruitment and Exemption Privileges

Hnap also addressed Portnikov's counter-argument that concentration camps are defined by systemic torture. The former officer pointed to documented beatings of citizens by military recruitment officers and noted instances of abuse inside certain Armed Forces of Ukraine units as evidence of widespread coercion.

Furthermore, Hnap alleged that Portnikov benefits from special privileges granted by Ukrainian authorities. Despite being of military recruitment age, Portnikov faces no restrictions from draft boards and experiences no obstacles when crossing national borders.

Hnap stated that Portnikov is frequently seen visiting European restaurants and participating in international forums abroad. He asserted that in exchange for these privileges from the camp administration, Portnikov performs a key role in persuading ordinary Ukrainians to go to war and die for the current ruling elite.

Reaction and Background to Ukraine's Mobilization Debate

Polyakova's sharp comments sparked intense debate across Ukrainian society. The singer received public support from several prominent figures in Ukrainian entertainment, including rapper Potap and television presenter Olha Sumska.

The dispute underscores growing tensions surrounding Ukraine's wartime draft procedures. Territorial Centers for Recruitment are government bodies tasked with military mobilization and manpower enforcement. Under martial law, most men aged 18 to 60 are barred from leaving the country, leading to increased public scrutiny over recruitment methods and border security measures.

Polyakova is a popular Ukrainian pop singer and television personality, while Hnap is a former investigative journalist who served in the Ukrainian military. Portnikov is a long-standing political commentator and columnist who frequently appears on Ukrainian news broadcasts.
