The Russian armed forces used a Geran-2 kamikaze drone featuring unusual markings during a strike on Ukrainian targets, according to published military footage.

Serhiy Beskrestnov, an adviser to the president of Ukraine, released imagery of the uncrewed aerial vehicle on the Telegram messaging service.

The photograph was captured in flight by an interceptor drone, a specialized high-speed uncrewed aircraft deployed to locate and track airborne targets. The image reveals a distinct protruding component built into the nose section of the Geran-2 fuselage.

The unusual structural detail suggests the aircraft may be equipped with a new warhead configuration or additional radio-electronic equipment. Modern electronic warfare modules on loitering munitions are typically integrated to counter anti-aircraft jamming and protect navigation signals.

The wing of the aircraft also bears the custom designation "5+0 Spec" marked on its surface. Standard Geran series drones are routinely stamped with a specific series letter followed by a numerical sequence code.

Drone specifications and design

The Geran-2 is a delta-wing loitering munition fitted with an internal combustion engine capable of propelling the aircraft at speeds of around 180 kilometers per hour. Internal combustion powerplants allow long-range uncrewed systems to sustain flight over extended distances compared to battery-powered models.

The aircraft carries a 50-kilogram high-explosive fragmentation warhead engineered to detonate on impact. High-explosive fragmentation payloads release high-velocity shrapnel upon detonation, designed to maximize damage across open target areas and surrounding structures.

Telegram, the messaging platform where the interceptor footage was distributed, is widely used by government officials and defense researchers across Eastern Europe for issuing public statements and distributing battlefield assessments.

In July, reports indicated that the Russian armed forces began using Gerbera multipurpose drones to control Molniya strike drones during operational sorties.

Multipurpose uncrewed aerial vehicles are increasingly utilized in modern conflicts as airborne signal relays or reconnaissance platforms, coordinating with shorter-range strike drones to extend their operational effectiveness.
